Hi guys,

Need to get your opinion on this lens. Have come across reports in other site such as photo.net with not so good feedback on this lens.

I am now using a 50mm Summicron f2 with Canon 10D and thinking to add this to my collection.

There is one very mint unit asking for abt U$600 negotiable.

Appreciate your opinion. Thanks

Zooms - even Leica ones - are rarely as good as a prime lens but of course they offer convenience.

The 28-70 does seem to be the poor relation in the family. It was actually made by Sigma (pretty certain it was Sigma and not Minolta). BUT people who own and use it seem to like it and on your Canon you won't be using it to full frame so you should be very pleased with it.

I'm sure some actual users will add their comments and maybe photos for you.

Noted and thanks James.

Yes I read it was Sigma, only reason looking at it because condition is like new.

There is another Elmarit 19mm f2.8 first generation (nearly 30 years lens) but looks like new asking for U$2,100 in Spore. Amazing how new it looked from photos thru the net.

I have been bitten by the Leica bug after using Nikkor lens for many years. The Leica just blew the Nikkors away (but not sure how top end Nikkor lens faired against leica)

I use this zoom lenses whit great results.

The lenses are very sharper and gives good contrast and resolution.

Avaoid to use this lenses for architectural Photos because they have many distortion.

However if you use this lense behind 35mm/60mm the lenses is near distortion free.

The last version is made my Kyocera under permission of Sigma.

The design of barrel and inside mechanics are completly redesing by Leica and some details of optics are change too.

One good lenses who are to much underratted in my opinion.

Best,

Don`t buy it. It is a Sigma lens of so so quality and 600$ is way too high. Check eBay and you will see that even the 2nd version sells for half that. If you want a short zoom, the 4/35-70 is an infinately better lens (made in Japan by Kyocera) but quality is on par if not better than the 2/50 and prices are very low also.

I have no idea how good the price is, but I can attest to the quality of the results with the lens. Even though Sigma made it, they made it based on Leica designs and Leica specs. The only problem with it I ever noticed was some barrel distortion in architectural situations. I also noted nearly identical distortion in the 28-90.

Thanks guys. I think the seller can let go at abt u$450 level. Price seemed high because its like new. Cond is very good. Seller always say its abt U$1200-1300 when new.

Meanwhile, appreciate more inputs pls

cheers

  • 2 months later...

I have one of these and it seems fine optically but what annoys me is the built in lens hood. It's such a loose fit. It will not stay collapsed or stay extended without flopping about at an angle. I'd appreciate a solution to this if anybody has one.

I had this lens with a R9. I had trouble focusing mine and found the screen quite dark (as much to do with R9 as the lens). The build quality was typical Leica and far better than most Japanese lenses. I traded it in for a 50/2 and 35/1.4. I later traded in the 50/2 for a 60/2.8. I love the 35 and the 60. The 50 was better than the zoom ... I would not go back to using that lens again, but then it may just be that I had a bad one. I think Canon do have some zoom lenses in this range that would be better than Leica zoom.

Yours

Ravi
