kenneth Posted May 29, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I took my newly acquired Leica M6 out for the first time today, fittingly, to the Cartier Bresson exhibition at the Bradford Photographic Museum. very good retrospective on a body of his work. The camera, terrific. I would say to anyone considering, as I was the choice of Leica M versus Leica R. Leica M hands down in fact I met up with a forum member ladened down with a Leica R system and at the moment I was convinced I had made the correct choice. The sheer freedom from clutter which I felt was amasing.

Guest Austerby Posted May 29, 2008 Share #3 Posted May 29, 2008 I had my M3 with me today when I went up to a job interview near to the Tower of London. Unfortunately it was raining quite heavily and what with trying to control an umbrella in the gusts I didn't manage to take many photos. I do like to take a Leica with me wherever I go with the intention of taking a few shots. I have too many, really, and this is a good way of making sure they all have some exercise, as do I in taking pictures. It is sometimes frustrating to look back on a day which many forum members may have been able to capitalise on to their benefit far greater than I managed - imagine, a wet day by the Thames with an M3 with a fresh roll of black and white film loaded! Of course, I did little enough - no more than five or so shots, most probably duff...

adan Posted May 30, 2008 Share #6 Posted May 30, 2008 Thursday: Drove 120 miles, shot a photo story on Colorado's smallest public library. M8 x 2 + 15, 21, 28, 50. Long round trip - pix worth it.

There's no doubt that for your style of photography, the M is the one to go for! R8/R9 plus 28-90 isn't as bad as one might think though. (Maybe I should have just taken my CM!) earleygallery Posted May 30, 2008 Share #10 Posted May 30, 2008 I would say to anyone considering, as I was the choice of Leica M versus Leica R. Leica M hands down. The M isn't better than the R or vice versa. They are different tools with strengths and weaknesses in different areas. Its a case of what works best for you given the style of photography you prefer. I use both systems and one cannot replace the other.
maxspbr Posted May 30, 2008 Share #11 Posted May 30, 2008 My world for photography is very little. Usually São Paulo, downtown. I like to use my IIc (or Contax II), and I'm almost always with it in the pocket. A famous photographer from XIXth Century, Militão Azevedo, made photos of this city from the same points for more than 30 years, every year at last. I have a kind of project like this. I only need more 25 years to finish it! Martin

lemalk Posted May 30, 2008 Share #13 Posted May 30, 2008 I took my M5 with 50 'cron and Digilux 3 with 135 Elmarit to Mission Beach in San Diego. I don't have any shots from the M5 yet - I was shooting Velvia 100. Here's a shot from the Digilux: The little brown spec is actually a piece of the cone on its way down! John Good to meet you- very good retrospective. Received the rest of my Leica bits today from Andy at The Classic Camera. Their service is really first class and I would strongly recommend anyone giving him a ring for their new or Used Leica needs. I also bought a Sekonic L398-A light meter further to my posts on light meters in Leeds. Friday not as good as yesterday, photographically but took a few b&w shots anyway, mainly to finish the roll of FP4 so as I can see the results. Let me know if you are over this way again, I will mail you if I am traveling east

But I did not say that, I personalised what I said when I said anyone considering as I was. I totally agree both system are equally as good as each other. It really boils down to personal requirements and the depth of ones pockets

Kenneth, I am glad you are happy, but there are many here who would disagree with your view in this case. The approach to "customer service" at The Classic Camera has been discussed here on many occasions. You don't have to take my word for it, but the fact that Leica have stripped them of their authorised dealer status speaks volumes. There are many other good dealers, both in London and elsewhere, that offer both new and used Leica equipment at better prices and with more courtesy. I would go as far as to say that I would shop at any of the others before going near TCC ever again. Regards, Bill

topoxforddoc Posted May 30, 2008 Share #18 Posted May 30, 2008 I took my R9/DMR to Tom Wheatcrot's Grand Prix museum at Donington today. I saw loads of cars, some of which I remember watching racing in the flesh. It was Senna's cars that moved me most. They reminded me of that day in 1994 at Imola on the Tamburello curve. Here's Tom Wheatcroft's tribute to him - his last ever McLaren. Charlie Welcome, dear visitor! Its a case of what works best for you given the style of photography you prefer. I use both systems and one cannot replace the other. I couldn't agree more James, I am sure Leica never produced the R system to compete with the M-line. For low light and static shots it's the M7 simply awasome, but when I want to use my vario lenses and shoot fast moving objects I choose my R system. They compliment each other. Time permitting, I also duplicate the shoot with the Canon G9 whenever I can, so as to pacify me untill I finish my slide film and get it develped.... lol. Horses for Corses. Cheers. andybarton Posted May 31, 2008 Share #20 Posted May 31, 2008 I took my M7 to the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition at Bradford today. The batteries ran out... I was actually disappointed with the exhibition too. I thought that the photographs were very poorly displayed, and while the idea of showing his enprints is an interesting one, they were too small to see properly, poorly printed in many cases (by him) and the light was reflecting off the glass on the frames. The choice to include some of his clunkers was encouraging though IMHO, there were too few decent sized prints and it was a wasted opportunity.
