Sorry to hear your news.

 

As said above you have kept remarkably calm about this. This to my mind is the best way to deal with it. Remain philosophical: be thankful there was no violence involved - as there often is - remember that theft happens to us all sooner or later so shrug your shoulders and consider this as your quota of the statistics. Be pleased that you have the means to replace the equipment. Use this as an opportunity to get an M8.

Very scary Gérard. I will be in Barcelona and Malaga on holiday by the end of the month. I'm sorry for your loss and likewise, I will take extra caution when I get to Spain since I've never been there. Perhaps limit my equiptment.

Ron, pretty much everyone I know who has been to Barcelona has a robbery tale to tell. Myself; our rental car was broken into and some bags stolen. Having said that, this topic comes up from time to time on this forum and the consensus is that danger and safety lie everywhere. I know friends who have been mugged in my neighbourhood in London but I've lived happily and uneventfully here for twelve years. Likewise there are many Spaniards who live in Spain equally uneventfully.

 

Limit your equipment by all means - travelling lightly is a pleasure - but just take normal precautions and enjoy yourself.

Terrible news, Gerard.

 

I was in Malaga only two weeks ago and experienced an attempted street theft to an elderly member of our small group. Fortunately my wife spotted what was happening and disturbed the thief, but it was a sobering and unnerving experience. Our guide could not believe it!

 

I suppose it reinforces the need to travel really light. I only had my M6, TriElmar and 21mm lenses which could be secreted in deep pockets if necessary.

Make sure your insurance covers the camera eqipment. Regular traveler's insurance will cover cameras, but a D2 and M7+glass forget it - way too expensive. Take out a seperate one for your gear and make sure it covers foreign travel.

Sorry to hear this. I had a Leica Mini 3 stolen once.

 

My rule of thumb. 1-2 camera bodies + 1-2 lenses...

 

I guess that zooms are good for this perhaps?

Sorry to hear that bad news!

 

I know that there is a new Leica R to EOS adaptor, which can provide a focus cofirmation signal to the Canon body. May be you can try.

 

BTW, I visited Spain in April this year. Before I started my trip I posted in the old forum, asking about the security in Spain, which created a lot of arguments.

 

Anyway I wish no more stolen incidents again.

Yes I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. We all love our Leica gear and many of us work and wait long and hard to aquire them. So its a big loss.

 

 

I had a friend of mine get his Hassey equipment stolen...from a car..as a rule I "NEVER ..EVER leave my camera equipment in any car...even just to get a loaf of bread and look somewhat foolish with camera gear strapped around me.

 

I hope you either have insurance or are able at some time to recover from your loss...soon.

Gerard, I am terribly saddened by your loss and hope that you had insurance that will cover it. Make sure you register your lost equipment with Leica as well as the police. You never know.

My wife and I had a similar experience about 10 years ago in Madrid. One of our tires was slashed IN FRONT OF THE RITZ HOTEL and several Arabs wanted to "help us". Knowing the routine we said no and drove the car to the nearest gas station where the tire was repaired. The doors and windows are always locked.... long live air-conditionning.

OMG!! I understand your hatred and the feeling of being violated.

 

We are glad that you did not get physically injured like in some cases. In some areas, you get shot for not carrying enough money, or they shoot you just for the heck of it after you have given them everything..

 

Depending on the type of car insurance, you may be covered under the comprehensive part of your car insurance. You may be able to recover at least some monetary value of the Leica. Mental and physical attachment to your beloved Leica may take a while to recover.

Dear Gerard,

 

I am very sorry to hear your bad news. I'm also sorry to hear that you are not insured. As you know, we were burgled about three weeks ago, but fortunately our items were covered by my household insurance. As a result I received my replacement DMR and R9 plus lenses last week. My cameras are insured under my household policy as "all risks" items.

Although Leica have shut the website address for reporting stolen cameras, I emailed Leica UK, who have put my items on their stolen database. I do hope you manage to get shooting again soon and look forward to seeing your pictures again.

I only need the M for B&W.

Worst comes to worst if the insurance is too steep... I'll bring my camera that's built like a Tank.

The Nikon F3HP. It takes pictures and can also work as a weapon to knock on the fellons head.

 

Ole!!! I'll be there at the San Diego of Europe next friday.

Mind you... it's more peaceful in San Diego than Los Angeles.

My renters policy (Nationwide here in the US) has a rider that covers my gear. It covers international loss and loss by the airlines as well (called "unexplained loss, IIRC). I was told by my agent to always try to get a police report.

 

The only question that could not be answered was what if my gear had been stolen while checked in my checked baggage during the last terrorist threat - would they try to claim that the loss was due to "terrorism"? <eek> (Sorry, but I view insurance companies only business is in trying to find a way to deny a claim.)

 

Concerns about theft and insurance is a great concern to use Leica users; where replacement costs for a decent M kit can approach the cost of a new car.

Also shoot it among the crowd without a visible Red Dot.

"BUT I'LL KILL FOR MY SD CARD"!!! if they forcibly take it.

Unless the fellon transfer the images on a DVD. Then they can have it.

 

M7 stays at home...

 

M6 will have a black tape on the red dot.

We're a group of 12 and all family.

But we agreed to exercise caution and stick together.

I am the one that's most fluent in spanish... maybe Chicano spanish that I learned from friends in L.A.

Wazap vato!!! Que paso ese!!! chide mama chola!!! Si mon ese!!! with a gang gesture on my hand. =)

We're visiting my late grandfather's hometown of Tarragona and Ibiza.

Malaga as part of the tour.

 

"I'll wear the spanish dress code of the season" so I'll be cool and look local.

No raiders jacket, no loose pants, no BK athletic shoes, and no 9 mil. =)

 

As though I'm going to a war zone in East L.A., Compton or Watts. =)

I won't dare bring a pin hole camera on those places.

You give it to them yet still those crack brains still shoot you.

I'm sure I'll be better off in Spain.

 

My frist day, I'll try to know where not to go.

Then exercise caution on where to go.

Something I learned as a regular expat "on boony places in the US though".

Were the country folks are so polite and so honest.

I had a great time in REK with my LX1K.So I understand where you are coming from.

My M6 is the LHSA model with the Black Dot. Wish the M8 had the Black Dot.

 

The point I think is that we need to to look at the exposure from an insurance standpoint. We may have the insurance coverage of $20KUS -bit we may never see that payoff.
