gdbale Posted May 13, 2008 Share #1 Â Posted May 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Been researching on purchacing my first SLR... really excited about it and would like some advice. As an amateur Im sure the digilux 2 would be more then what I need, but from what I understand you can't change the lenses... is this correct? Also Im sure everyone here would recommend the digilux 3 over the canon but why? For me I love the classic design but what are peoples general thoughts on why it would be a better purchace... (trying to justify spending more on a used leica then on a new canon with two lenses and some extras) As of now Looking for a used digilux 3 if anyone has any leads btw... Â Â Thanks... Advertisement Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Hi gdbale, Take a look here Digilux 3 vs Digilux 2 vs Canon 400d. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
spylaw4 Posted May 13, 2008 Share #2 Â Posted May 13, 2008 You are correct as regards the D2 - a fixed 28-90 (equivalent mm) lens with f2 -2.4. Small(ish), light(ish), and quiet! Makes exceedingly good pics. Go for it!
krabat Posted May 13, 2008 Share #3 Â Posted May 13, 2008 Yes, the DL 2 is a nice camera. I love it! However, it is NOT a SLR.
jaapv Posted May 13, 2008 Share #4 Â Posted May 13, 2008 I do not want to put down the D3 - good sensor, larger than the Digilux2, but smaller than the Canon, but the camera a bit of a lump.. The Canon a more eleborate system and more versatile, the Digilux3 an easy entry into the R system and compatible with the excellent Olympus system, but I prefer the Digilux2. Light, silent, more thant excellent image quality, maybe a bit of a handful at higher ISO's, an incredibly good lens which covers the needs of 98% of photographers, and quite affordable nowadays because the technology has been overtaken by time (not that that is a bad thing per se). Overgaard Posted May 13, 2008 Share #5 Â Posted May 13, 2008 Digilux 2 is a classic and can do 90% of the photography one would want, silent and light as well. And extremely nice JPG's straight out of the camera. Â Only thing is the small sensor that mean you will have a hard time creating DOF with the Digilux 2, whereas a dSLR behaves like SLR and DOF comes with the territory. Â Another issue is the low ISO, but that is compensated for by the fact that you can shoot the Leica Digilux 2 as a Leica M, meaning you can shoot as low as 1/8 or 1/15.and still have a good grip on the camera. Â As for the Digilux 3 I have no personal experience. I see many very happy with it, but also many who prefer their Digilux 2 for their Digilux 3 after a while. Mainly weight, size and silence, I think. Â One last thing: Pick your camera with the hearth. Pick the one you like the most and would love to take out for photographing. All the technical stuff is hype and no matter what technology, you are the photographer, not the camera. Â Have fun (and welcome to the forum by the way)

dugby Posted May 14, 2008 Share #7 Â Posted May 14, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, and welcome to this forum. Â As you have researched the D2 and D3, by now you should understand that both of these cameras are re-badged Panasonic LC1 and L1 respectively. Despite many conflicting forum discussions about Leica changed the Firmware.(..blah-blah) , they are essentially the same cameras. Â I own both a D2 and L1 (actually... to my embarrassment 4 Leica cameras), and have written much on them in this forum, so will not repeat it. Â I enjoy using both and at this stage have no intentions of selling either. Â What I will say with confidence......When out and about, doing general shooting of people, sport and wildlife, I find that I get a higher percentage of "great shots" on the L1, and a much lower percentage on the D2. Â Why...? I feel that the D2 is a "slower to capture" camera. It's absolutely brilliant when you have time on your side. Many people can produce a brilliant shot for the above scenarios I described, however in a fixed time period, I get more great shots per minute with the L1. Â So why do I keep the D2,...... it's a much smaller and lighter, and totally silent shooter, and for really important occasions, is my backup to the L1. Â Â Finally with 'careful' research about a seller, Ebay 'can be" a safe place to buy a Leica (I did). However make sure you understand the current "D2-sensor failure & repair" situation that is widely discussed on this forum.
gdbale Posted May 14, 2008 Author Share #8 Â Posted May 14, 2008 It might be a naive question but how and why do you justify spending the money on the leica over a canon... Trying to make a decision on what to go for... Â I've looked into it quite a bit and can find a used digilux 3 in mint condition for around 650 pounds... Â But with 650 I could get a 400d with 2 lenses and some other accessories in a package. Â I want something that I'm going to keep for a long time... and Im an amateur to say the least. For whatever reason Im drawn to the leica but trying to justify it over something else... Â Help?
rivi1969 Posted May 14, 2008 Share #9 Â Posted May 14, 2008 I have the D2, an L1 and a Nikon D80... First of all if you have plans to buy a used Leica D2 you better make sure it has the upgraded sensor, if not don't buy it because it is going to die any day now. The L1 produces wonderful images but the handling and the feel has nothing to do with the M feel of the D2, is much like a Nikon or Canon in that respect, specially with the huge lenses. I used to have a Canon but the plastiky feeling makes me sold it quickly. Â It all depends on what makes you happy :-) Â R
dugby Posted May 15, 2008 Share #10  Posted May 15, 2008 It might be a naive question but how and why do you justify spending the money on the leica over a canon... Trying to make a decision on what to go for... I've looked into it quite a bit and can find a used digilux 3 in mint condition for around 650 pounds...  But with 650 I could get a 400d with 2 lenses and some other accessories in a package.  I want something that I'm going to keep for a long time... and Im an amateur to say the least. For whatever reason Im drawn to the leica but trying to justify it over something else...  Help?  This is actually quite a sensible question ...... that I pondered over for a period prior to buying my D2 which was my 1st of four Leica cameras, and then L1  To make it even more interesting I bought the D2 sight-unseen, and not even having neither touched one nor seen one in a shop window, and it was my 1st ever Ebay transaction......what a period of excitement that was........!!!  This site <http://www.pixel-peeper.com/cameras/?camera=384> <http://www.pixel-peeper.com/cameras/?camera=385> links to some very good sample images and reviews of the L1 and D3.  It was the Leica 'glow' in the L1/D3 images that convinced me to pay a premium for a Leica. If you look long and hard at a range of Canon, Nikon and Leica images you will see what I am referring to.  In my film days I have had a string of RF/SLRs from Minolta, Nikon F1, Olympus OM4 all of which lasted many years, so I too wanted something in the digital realm that will "last". But we know this is NOT possible in the evolving digital realm. The film - "sensor" is changing too rapidly and delivering significant improvements with each new generation.  So now I see that the camera body may be 'junked' every few generations, but hopefully the manufacturers will 'honor' our investment in lenses.  All I can say is, when you buy any of today's Digital Cameras, it will be superceded sooner than you expect.  PS you can save some serious $/UKP by buying the black version of the D3....... Â Justifying the price of a Leica Camera, IMHO, is not the best reason for deciding to actually buy one. Â There is a certain level of quality to be expected in both the image and the construction of the camera not to mention the warranty as well. Â Leica is expensive. There are no two ways about it. Â No matter how many times you click your ruby slippers together the black Panasonic L1 will never turn into a Leica camera. Period. Too many differences. I don't care who makes the camera if it says Leica Germany on it. What I do care about is the design, engineering, image quality, warranty and backing that goes with it, Â There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Panasonic L1. It takes great pictures the same as the Leica Digilux 3. The pictures are just different. Â I own both brands as well as Olympus and Kodak. I like all four for different reasons. Â I bought a name and reputation and warranty as well as image quality and design when I bought the Leica.
dugby Posted May 16, 2008 Share #13  Posted May 16, 2008 The great irony of whether an L1 is a Leica , or a D3 is a Panasonic..... or is a D2 a Panasonic, or an LC1 a Leica   If i stick Velvia, Fuji, Kodak, or Ilford film into a film "Leica M", the photo is Leica shot photo.....why ...predominantly because of the glass. However the images will appear different because of the acetate, the film processing technique, and the brand of enlarger lens, paper processing technique and the chosen paper.  But in today's digital camera world we can stick a "Leica" designed lens on a Canon, Olympus, Panasonic or Leica and end up with........an image.... shot by which manufacter's lens...?
