Very good LCT.

I have also heard about the new mount.

Note, Kaufmann referred to a SLR, not an "R"

To be frank, I don't know why so many of you are so worried about the R10.

Our present R lenses work very well on Canon DSLR bodies.

In my view you are better off in using the R lenses with a Canon then that other PanaLeica

Monstrosity called the D3.

On both systems you need an adapter = Ok so you need to step down metering, so what.

You can use Canon lenses for certain types of applications full auto and AF, and Leica R for others.

The beauty with Canon, you have their big lens inventry, plus other independent lens manufactories that make lenses for the EOS system.

The PansLeica system future is ?????????????????????????????????????.

Remember, we Leica R users are very lucky indeed, but we cannot see the tree because of the forrest.

For my Digital needs, I have purchessed a Canon G9, and I simply love it, it fits in my shirt pocket nicely and doesn't get in the way whenever I am using my beloved Leica R.

Simply a wonderful combination.

Cheers.

P.S.

Dear Leica.

Is there any chance if you can make us a very nice Leica R to EOS adapter Please.

Thanks no thanks my friend. I don't want a PanaLeica thing but i don't want a Canon either. I own some not so bad Nikon glass already so if Leica don't launch an R10 to my likings next year, i'll sell my R glass and go for a Nikon and a couple Zeiss lenses for the latter.

Canon is the way to go, LCT. They'll have two new (upscale) models this year ... besides the R lenses, you can also use your Nikon and/or Zeiss lenses as well.

I've noticed this too on several occasions. Perhaps the next camera after the R9 will be called SL10 (totally unfounded speculation).

If this will make you feel better about having a Canon, especially when you see it's good enough for Anne Leibovitz and the Queen ...

What matters to me is whether it's good enough for me.

Nah, it'll be called SL3 ... Doug. ;)

If the existing R lenses can only be used with the "R10" in a crippled manner, then it's better to stay with the DMR until it breaks down.

If the "R10" won't take existing R lenses at all, then it's worse than anything else which will let you to do so.

I'm expecting the DMR price on eBay soaring when news breaks ... but hey, if the "R10" can be had for less than $2k, I wouldn't mind them changing the mount every time. :p

If the new camera doesn't support R lenses to the fullest extent possible, I can see Leica even now raising their foot and taking aim. It would be a commercial disaster. Imagine if they had done that with the M8?

I think R10 is an unfortunate name... "I see you bought a Leica Rio....", a new naming convention after vacation destinations. Coming next, the Leica Phuket...

What i'm afraid of is the M8 spirit at Leica, i mean the behavior consisting to take thoughtless risks in the hope of winning whatever marketing competition against nikanopus brands. Instead of aiming at a more than full frame sensor putting everyone in trouble, suffice it to offer what most customers need i.e. a full frame Leica to fit their great Leica lenses thats all.

I am in a very similar position. The Nikon D3 beckons and sets my bench mark against which I will judge Leica announcements at Photokina.

"Most" is unsupported. Maybe "some'" would be more accurate? Who knows? Hopefully leica does.

Why would the price of the DMR a 3 year old (plus), "semi" supported electronic accessory for a camera no longer produced go up in value when the new generation is announced ? if you look at DMR prices today they are holding well at about 60 pct or so of original cost....

Perhaps Leica take the view that the 'M' is their traditional bedrock product, and that they tinker with that form factor at their peril.

With the 'R' though they might consider they they can afford, maybe need, to be more adventurous, hence the hints of 'full frame or larger', a new mount and possibly autofocus. I concur with Mark though, in that ensuring future compatibility with existing 'R' lenses should be considered an essential part of that adventure.

On the subject of a name for the new camera. Well 'R10' is assumed by many and Doug Herr has suggested resurrecting the 'SL' moniker, so perhaps Leica should consider calling it the 'Leica SLR';) . Do you think it could catch on?:)

That's a good one, Steve ... well, the only good sign is, Dr. Kaufmann didn't add a "D" in front of "SLR" - if you know what I mean. ;):D

Olaf,

now there is the follow-up to your Handelsblatt article on Leica/Andreas Kaufmann: same newspaper Handelsblatt/Duesseldorf - co-production - with DW-Germany TV for report "Made in Germany: Leica: Focussing on Profit" (broadcast 18.3.2008 in German/English)

News release: ...highly accurate lens made it a highly prized camera for professionals and ambitious hobby photographers...but when digital cameras began their world-wide conquest a decade ago... Leica stuck to film... decision put company in financial difficulties... recently [Leica] entered digital business... owner and CEO, Andreas Kaufmann.. Leica is focussing on new markets and target groups for a profitable future....

Did your article for the Handelsblatt serve as the starting-point for Andreas Hewel's updated report on Leica Camera AG's "new markets" and "target groups" DW-Germany TV?

Olaf,

another point, is when you stated "[Andreas Kaufmann has] some 'strong stuff' against Steven K. Lee". But didn't you get the impression it was more of a conflict of strong personalities - Kaufmann vs Lee - and a question of Leica's corporate-culture resistent to change?

If this will make you feel better about having a Canon, especially when you see it's good enough for Anne Leibovitz and the Queen ... note, what's mounted on the 1Ds Mk II is a lowly 24-70 costing ONLY 1100 USD when brandnew - cheaper than the cheapest Leica. :p

YouTube - Monarchy - Annie Leibovitz

...true, and what does royalty herself prefer?...a leica, of course...
