Nick De Marco Posted February 28, 2008 Author Share #21 Posted February 28, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Phew... I was outbid. It went for £599 at the end. I hope the buyer is lucky and gets a good bargain, but I'm glad I did not risk it. Now what to do with the imaginary money I set aside for it? Look for another... or ... put it and shed loads more of imaginary money toward an M8? I'd be very interested to know what M film users think. I use digital a lot (Canon 5D - I'm very happy with it and have invested heavily in Canon L glass). But I also love the small size of M cameras, how they work and their lenses. Hence I have a few I regularly use with film. I have been tempted for ages to buy an M8 to 'bridge the gap'. I would still use my 5D for most ocassions and I hope I would still use the film cameras especially for B&W film. But it would be great to have an M8 and use my various Leica/Zeiss/Voigt lenses when I like and get quick result. Is it a waste of money or should I make the sacrfice? Advertisement Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Hi Nick De Marco, Take a look here You can only read this if you promise not to outbid me. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
festgriff Posted February 28, 2008 Share #22 Posted February 28, 2008 I changed from the M6 to the M8 last March. It is expensive, it does have its problems - read almost any post here on this forum - but it has something I wouldn't want to part with now. In fact, although I had promised my wife (probably on the bible ) I would keep my M6 and keep using it I ended up always leaving the M6 at home and enjoying the advantages of digital. Now I know "something" sounds awfully soft and squishy and a lot like marketing but is there really any difference to the laudations Leica glass gets everywhere? (And which in my opinion it decidedly deserves) If you really want to use your Leica glass, now that the problems with the AWB seem to be over, I would heartily recommend a M8. I haven't regretted it - even when my daughter was getting better white balance from her 300 € Casio Exilim and laughing at me and my old funny Leica. For me the M8 is a way to keep some control of the creative process and be as pure as possible in a digital world. I enjoy manually focussing my shots, I enjoy full control over my exposure, and I definitely didn't want to give up Leica glass. Now I believe I have the best of both worlds -and I wouldn't go back to film, nor give up my M8. I know I am going to get a lot of gruff about that statement - but I am no professional, just an amateur with an expensive hobby and thats how I feel. If you like the rangefinder experience and the state of control an M8 offers then I would say go for it.... In any case have fun taking pictures and enjoy. Photoskeptic Posted February 28, 2008 Share #23 Posted February 28, 2008 "tread gently through the greasemud" This doesn't smell, it stinks! Having had my account hijacked by some scumbag in UK, I'd say another scumbag has struck.
tobey bilek Posted February 28, 2008 Share #24 Posted February 28, 2008 Total fraud or stolen merchandise. Be careful.
PaulL Posted February 28, 2008 Share #25 Posted February 28, 2008 I have been following leica items on ebay for some months and have noticed quite a few items that come up for sale where the seller is in the uk and says the item is in Austria and will be shipped. Usually the seller has low few feedback certainly in single figures. There are also a number of Hong kong dealers posing as European or Uk dealers. Only when you pay for the item do you find it comes from Hong Kong direct. I believe ebay has a number of leica items at the momment proposing they come from austria and like you Id be very interested how genuine these are. ejd Posted February 28, 2008 Share #26 Posted February 28, 2008 Is it a waste of money or should I make the sacrfice? Nick -- If I were you I would keep my options open and hang on to my money. M8s and their successors will become more plentiful, better, and cheaper in the coming months and years. There will be various upgrades and improvements to new cameras. There will be more and more secondhand ones on the market. There may be special offers on new cameras. Meanwhile you have many film Ms (and other film cameras..) and a Canon 5D that you like. If you change your mind and decide to get an M8 sometime in the coming months, you will almost surely be able to do so at no higher cost than now. lphong Posted February 28, 2008 Share #27 Posted February 28, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) WHAT????? MP for £599?? Cheaper than my M6! I really would give up eating for 96 hours for that! It's MAD!! Oh, i am jealous!
Chrism.. Posted February 28, 2008 Share #28 Posted February 28, 2008 No feedback since August. Lots of activity, then nothing for months. This smells like a hi-jacked account. It would help if you could see the items bought or sold. You can't, and it looks like a scam. This may be. There where stolen two pictures from our Buy&Sell Section this week, and used for E-bay offers (here is the topic but its in German). In one case there was probably a hi-jacked account in the other case the seller has owned up his act and it seems to go to court. In both cases: - the item where located in austria - the action was offered for 3 days Be careful, Regards, Christoph
Nick De Marco Posted March 3, 2008 Author Share #29 Posted March 3, 2008 UPDATE Surprise surprise - I have now recived a "second chance" offer to buy the camera for my max bid, £500. The person who outbid me did not buy it (I am not surprised) and nor shall I. Here's the new advert... Leica MP 0.85 Chrom on eBay, also, 35mm Rangefinder, Film Cameras, Photography (end time 04-Mar-08 18:18:48 GMT)

Chrism.. Posted March 3, 2008 Share #31 Posted March 3, 2008 UPDATESurprise surprise - I have now recived a "second chance" offer to buy the camera for my max bid, £500. The person who outbid me did not buy it (I am not surprised) and nor shall I. Here's the new advert... Leica MP 0.85 Chrom on eBay, also, 35mm Rangefinder, Film Cameras, Photography (end time 04-Mar-08 18:18:48 GMT) Mhh it sounds too good. wouldn´t it a nice trick to get the price "high" by using another account. Than inform the no.2. It has to the advantage that others can warn the winner but the (nik) name of the other bidders is hidden. (The winner from the German offer was probably the seller itsels, same stupid spelling, and was not very thankful reading my warning) Maybe fist check his language style and skills. I wrote him in German today, if he can not communikate in his language he will probalby not have Leica (I assume korrelation between the intense of education and the probability of owning a Leica MP) Maybe its possible to assure you against cheating, cash on delivery would me an option. Good luck, and be careful,
nobbylon Posted March 3, 2008 Share #32 Posted March 3, 2008 I emailed the seller and offered to pick it up in person and pay cash. I doubt I will get a reply! Do these scammers really think we are all this stupid?!!!!!
Dikdik Posted March 3, 2008 Share #33 Posted March 3, 2008 Seriously. I trust you. If I have found a bargain here, please don't outbid me. I'd love to have an MP to add to my collection. Leica MP 0.85 Chrom on eBay, also, 35mm Rangefinder, Film Cameras, Photography (end time 28-Feb-08 09:50:13 GMT) BUT, the fable - if it looks too good to be true it probably is - is ringing around my ears. A very low starting price with no reserve. I have made a bid, speculatively (thus my plea to you) and tried to get some more info from the seller (so far to no avail). Any obvious warning signs here (apart from the no paypal worry), or have I found myself a great possible bargain that you are not going to usurp? Thanks Nick Hello to all; There are a lot of reasons not to bid to this offer: 1. As people here has already stated: item location, seller's country and transport country are NOT located in the same country. 2. The history of the seller is absolutely mysterious. He did only sell on private auctions. It is impossible to locate the town in Germany, where this person is living. 3. The offer shows only ONE - please let me repeat - ONE foto. This foto looks furthermore like a standard foto from one of the different advertising publications. 4. There are no further informations about the camera. There is nothing about the previous owner, nothing, why the seller will sell this camera, nothing, that can tell me, that the seller can say anything about this special camera. 5. The camera is too cheap!!!!! 6. When clicking on the button "view seller's other items" there is not recorded this special camera. There is only an offer for a very old "Leica M2 black paint". 7. Nevertheless, if the seller should be seriously, he is unable to create a serious advertising on Ebay. Sorry, but than he has to learn it at first. But now there is absolutely no reason to bid to this offer! 8. THIS OFFER IS NOT RELIABLY !!!! STAY AWAY!!!!!! Best regards from Germany Dikdik

Craftsman Posted March 3, 2008 Share #35 Posted March 3, 2008 Here's another Leica scam. There are more and more everyday.: I just reported it to eBay. Watch it'll be deleted within a couple of hours . ebay # 170198810344
summitar* Posted March 3, 2008 Share #36 Posted March 3, 2008 As people here has already stated: item location, seller's country and transport country are NOT located in the same country. A lot of people living in Central Europe and selling on ebay live in one country and ship from another. For myself I live in Belgium and ship from Germany (my work place - only 10min away - shipping is faster and cheaper). I never had problems with that and nobody asked me why in 5 years I´m trading on ebay.
