I simple put my camera bag strap around my knee and ankle sometimes. They would have to steal my leg too. Old NY trick

That is an old NYC trick. I do the same.

Chris very sorry, I know how horrible you must feel, luckily the theft wasn't a violent one.

I'd notify Solms, list your stolen gear here (isn't there a sticky for posting serial numbers here on the forum?) and monitor Ebay with a saved search.

Good luck!

Advice?

1. I can get hold of a new but discounted 75 apo f2 or a mint 75 lux for around £1200 .. I like the lux, but also find that it's a hard lens to work with. Anyone with comparative experience of nailing the focus with the f2 compared with f1.4? Reality is that I VERY rarely use f1.4 because the DOF is so hard to work with.

2. F2 Apo 28 cron vs the new 28 f2.8 Tempted by the low bulk + cost - worried about losing the stop + the signature. Any thoughts?

Getting there...

Best.

I'm not normally one to make a big thing about lens signature because I don't think good photography depends upon such things but I did find that the 28/F2.8 ASPH I briefly owned had a very different look to the Summicron I had been used to. So much so that I ended up buying another Summicron. I too had been tempted by the diminutive size of the Elmarit (I'm not too fussed about the one-stop difference in speed) and rather foolishly sold my first Summicron before realising how much I didn't like the look from the smaller 28. My unscientific evaluation is that the look from the Elmarit ASPH is significantly more 'digital' in appearance (very sharp, very contrasty and with more 'apparent' DOF when compared on an equivalent aperture basis). I really wanted to like the Elmarit - I'm not keen at all on the size of modern Leica lens like the 28 Summicron - but it had to go. Fortunately, the 30% lens rebate (which I wouldn't otherwise have used) came to my rescue and I managed to get another Summicron and sell the (then hard to get hold of) Elmarit without taking a financial hit.

Sorry to hear Chris...

Still leaves a bad taste in your mouth, insurance or no insurance.

Talking of wrapping your bag straps around your legs, don't most bags come with release hooks these days?

Personally I remove my M8 from the bag and step into the strap, leaving the camera suspended between my legs !!!

Kinda awkward when a Lady joins you ~!!!

28 cron or elmarit....?

I was lucky enough that my local dealer had both in stock for me to do a side by side test. I went for the Elmarit because after allowing for my eyesight (haphazard focusing with F2) I couldn't justify the extra grand. The different look of the lenses is of course subjective and it was close enough that it wasn't an issue for me.

Good luck & regards

Jim

ahh - the benefits of coding. As it is, the story's beginning to look less like a disaster. My insurers Aaduki (UK based and found as a result of advice from a forum member!!), are being incredibly helpful and suggest I may be able to get agreement to replace by Monday. This will be on a new for old basis so far as I can see (so I'll go for a new 28 cron + the 75 cron as the lux is no longer made) and will therefore get the filters and coding as a default.:)

Still touching wood, but beginning to feel hopeful. Thanks again to all of you for your help and advice. :o

Dear All - just to say that there was a silver lining. My insurers (Home page of Aaduki Multimedia Insurance) have been fantastic and have negotiated with the underwriter the complete replacement with new for old of everything that was stolen (down to my Domke satchel, +3 diopter, spare batteries and 3 SD cards!). The total value of the claim was over £7000 / $13,500 and I'm going to have to pay out £605 (£200 excess + £400 because I'd undervalued the 28 cron).

OK - I'd rather not have had the stuff stolen and it's been a lot of hassle, but I'm getting new replacements for my 6 year old 28 and 12 year old 75 lux + my 12 month old M8 + even the ten year old bag, so hats off to the insurance industry and to the Forum for giving me good advice on where to insure!

:)

Good news Chris! I'm glad things are working out for you. I've had stuff stolen myself and it is such a pain. Like some schmucks used the sailboat I own with two friends as a source of spare parts. Ours is from 1978 and the type hasn't been built since the late 1970s  Not at all fun.

Congrats Chris, and I hope your insurance company doesn't raise your premiums so sky high they basically force you to cancel your policy, like happened to me when I had some gear stolen. And its good news also because now the Portugese police can put their men back on looking for that little girl.

Dave - thanks for the heads up on this - but I don't think I'm going to bother as I've just picked up my new M8 / 75 Cron / 28 Cron and am as happy as a pig in muck! The 75 cron is a LOT easier to work with than my instance of the Lux - I loved it, but I think I might use this one more. Full image + 100% crop. AWB / iso 320.. Light's horrid, but it's a good test if you can get the grille and the lettering clear(including the slight doubling because of reflection onto the LCD glass). Hand held at 1/350th fully open. What a nice lens!

Regardless of how dorky it looks, I cross strap over my shoulder in public. Be it the bag or the camera itself at the dining table. Likewise, I have a personal articles policy on my camera and 28-cron. I will now go down and add my new 50-lux in the morning.

Regards,

Good moves Daniel - and really worth getting regular re-valuations of equipment. This is where I tripped up. I'm now getting my dealer (R.G.Lewis) to confirm the value of my Leica gear and I'll log this with my insurers AND I'm setting a reminder in my diary to do this once a year. Let's hope that Leica price hikes are only annual!:o
