Aperture 2 is out

Russell / Tim, the proofing view is more applicable if using custom paper icc profiles or changing the output embedded profile to sRGB for web. I can see huge differences if I select say a hahnemuhle photo rag for printing which can make the shadows blotchy or skintones posterised , by selecting the proofing profile and then turning it on (2 steps) I can compensate with adjustments during the processing of the image.

Tim, I'm interested to hear what you think on the print output from that beast you have now LOL, don't forget to disable colour management in the printer settings within aperture print settings and save it as a preset. Then select the paper icc profile form the colorsync profile dropdown and save again. The output sharpening is new and I'm curious as to the results.

I've got that all down pat now - the Z3100 makes its own profiles so I'm using those for soft proofing. The problem is that Aperture's proofing view doesn't let you select paper colour or rendering intent so it's rather basic as far as I can see...

I was just importing straight from the SD card.

I will try running through DNG Converter later this evening, but if that adds or takes away something to/from the image, it sort of defeats the object really.

If it works, I'll probably pony up the £69 for the upgrade. I have m.u.g. tattooed on my forehead for just these occasions :)

Andy, Capture One v4.1 works brilliantly with DMR files, and includes highlight and shadow recovery directly... I know you bought the previous version of Aperture, I was hopeful they would have corrected their oversight with respect to the DMR. Clearly they still have not. As for me, I will not waste my time with Aperture...

Guy, the default should be 2.0 for a standard M8 DNG file. 2.0 DNG is for camera raw files which are not natively supported within Aperture and passed through ADNC before import. However using 2.0 DNG with a M8 file not passed through ADNC give a decode based on the actual colour matrix and camera calibration details inside the file rather than Apples settings. It's very subtle in it's difference but it is different.

Thanks Eoin that is what i noticed also , reason I asked was to be sure and that is what I have been figuring out. Looks pretty good, not sure I would give up LR for it but another tool out there. Need to try some studio shots and see how it does, my Moab images look pretty darn good with it but want to try lighting stuff. I like the idea of tethered and have to try that.

C1 version 4 is just to clumsy for workflow for me. Hopefully when Pro comes out it will be better but after so many upgrades i actually have to buy it again and not so sure it will be worth it.

Anyone is having very funny results in duplicating a pic version already with some adjustments on it ? On my iMac the colors are totally different on the duplicating version.Thanks.EM

Perhaps I can explain what I think is happening to you. By default Aperture imports your DNG and shows only a version of the unprocessed DNG in the viewer. Every time you make a change to that version it reflects the change. Now when you want to create a new version, highlight the image you want and go to the menu bar, select image and you'll see 2 options. Duplicate version, which will give you an exact copy of the file you have selected with all your adjustments, or New version from Master which will give a new version of the file selected without any adjustments just as you had brought it into Aperture.

I have no problem duplicating versions and the colours match exactly. There is however a bug I've noticed, if you switch on adjustments create new version in the Aperture preferences and adjust an image it creates a new version but the original version goes blank with just a grey box. But this preview seems to be re-generated when you restart aperture. It's just a neater way IMO to have versions of the same file stacked. You can flag any of your versions as the stack pick and it will appear on top when you close the stack.

Hi Eoin,

thnaks for your explanation , but I use Aperture since oneyear now and I know how it works.

My problem is that with V.2 the new imagines creates in duplicting a previous vesrsion ( not a new version from master) are showing up with a color having a different tonality and this only on the viewer, on the preview it's ok.

Other funy stuff is that if I put the mouse on the line between the main view and the previews ( where you can modify the size ) the color change in normal, but as I move my mouse from there the problem appears again.

I admit that at first, since there are many changes in C1 v4, I found it complex to navigate "until" I saw the video, I have not looked back since. Beyond that, it is still far and away the best raw processor for DMR files. I believe you no longer have your DMRs...

Tried Aperture 2 on my PPC 2x2,5 Ghz. How come it's so slow, especially with

recovery and enhance tools ? I've never experienced that with LR or C1 v.4.

Plus I have the same bugs on color display : suddenly, version (not master)

goes totally blank, or blue…:eek::rolleyes:

hello Johan:

happy not to be the only one having this bug on color display.. I tried Aperture 2 also on a PB17 G4 and the result is the same as on the iMac Intel.

Please check if your color becomes normal wen you place your mouse btween preview and the image..

Thanks.

Ezio,

I could not reproduce the colour bug since last night. For me, it seemd related to the "Highlight of hot and cold areas" in "View".

Anyway, my problem is I just click the mouse in the picture, doing nothing, and my processor roars to life — which it should not. :p

I had that kind os strange behaviour with first LR beta.

For me it's not related to "highlight of hot and cold areas", but just to the duplication of a previous version, and it appears on the main view ( also full screen) while the pre-views on the botoom of the screen are ok.. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/images/icons/icon5.gif

very strange.

Converting in DNG Converter doesn't work, I'm afraid.

Comparison between Capture One 4.01 and Aperture 2

Interestingly, although both the same size, the Aperture version needed to be dropped down a notch in the jpg compression

No adjustments done to either of these images.

At first sight, C1 seems more true to life, especially on hair, greys and white rendered much better.

Deserves a tad more vibrancy. Skin tones a bit dull and more yellowish.

Aperture is more flashy, with funny highlights in the white orchids.

Did not see original scene and colours, though.

.....but I use Aperture since oneyear now and I know how it works....

Oops!,:o Just a thought, you did check for further software updates after updating to OSX 1.5.2?. There is a graphics update available after 1.5.2 is installed.
