Sorry, EVEN Leica have to be relatively price competative with the market. Do you really think they'd bother if it meant having to charge say £10K/$20K for it? They aren't going to make something that they know only a handful of fanatics will buy...

Agree. There will be an M9 soon or late and its price won't be higher than the market IMHO. A Leica is a miniature format, not an MF camera.

What will the value of a used M8 be once the M9 is introduced? Will will see a 50% drop in price for a used M8?...

Not sure because there will be some demand from people who cannot afford to buy the M9 or M8-2. A digital CL could be an M8 killer though.

Rule of thumb ... digital model will lose more than half of its original value once the next generation is available:

A 1Ds mark II is around 3500 US now, a D2x is less than 1800 US ... MINT.

My guess is that Leica will continue to think the used market as their entry level. Question is: the M can't be simpler, what can you take away to build a cheaper model?

A digital CL will appear to be smaller than its big brother but the innards will remain the same ... there're several ways to cripple the CL to make it cheaper though ... strip RAW, completely disable 3rd party lenses, no metering at all, no auto exposure, battery only good for 50 shots.

Giving the forum members an opportunity to hack away, and chances for garage projects. LOL

Forget to mention, like many Japanese companies are doing with their cheap models now ... the charger will be optional at buyers' cost. :D

Rules of thumb don't always work in niche markets Simon.

I bought my R-D1s new 2,000 euros all taxes included and they sell now for 1,500 euros without taxes in Japan and HK. Add to this 25% for VAT and customs duties and this gives you roughly the actual price of a discontinued camera in Europe right now.

... it will be an APS-C camera. Only way not to kill the M8 if any...

Another way consisting to repeat what Leica did in the seventies, give the digi CL a short based rangefinder and 3 framelines only: now 28/35/50 like Epson's BTW.

No no mate, as i have designed it myself rolleyes.gif it will be an APS-C camera. Only way not to kill the M8 if any.

An APS-C CL will still put the M8 in limbo IMO ... how big is the difference between 1.5x and 1.33x? I find that speaking for myself alone, I'll have a hard time to justify the cost difference.

It's unlike the differences between a 40D and a 1D Mk3 ... they're basically made for two different type of people.

I do like your idea about only three frame lines, perhaps they could build the new tri-elmar into the body. :)

Hello,

for all who dodn't understand the german language, here is an interesting shot:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/sport-freizeit/44023-night-race-schladming-2008-a.html

May be it is made with the R10 prototype!

Regards,

Bernd.

Whatever it was made with, it is not a camera Leica is currently producing.

Exif removed, 1600 ISO without noise, a bit like those cars with pieces of cardboard stuck all over them we see in car magazines.

I wish I read German! The aspect ratio is something, too... why are people in the German forum thinking this is an R prototype?

There is actually no real info about the fact if this is the R10. All assumptions ;)

And Ronald is making lot of fog around this, stating this might have been a Digilux3 - which I doubt!

Format could point to the R10 ???

We will see ;)

A guess:

I think we'll see more emphasis on "affordable" back-to-basics products due to the weak US Dollar and worries about global recession. R10 could possibly be an "economy" model based heavily on the M8, but more polished in terms of IR filtering, noise, 16-bit output, SD HC and incorporating a dedicated ISO dial. In order to cut costs, ROM-equipped lenses may be required. Higher-end full-frame models may have to wait. R10 could be a bit on the large size, in order to better differentiate from M-system and also to accomodate future full-frame sensors.

That ski picture on the German forum doesn't look at all, it's not even in focus, if that's what the R10 can do then I'd gladly pass it. Regarding the aspect ratio, I think it's just cropped to 16:9, seems there's a lot of HDTV addicts there, not my cup of tea ...
