My CL returned from Wetzlar today, economically not repairable, it did not accept L lenses any more. So after a rummage in my cupboard I came up with Novoflex M adapter, Summicron C 40, Voigtlanders 25 and 15. And you know what?. A joy to use, and a Barnack-EV1. I will love to try it out.

Nice little camera indeed. Those lenses do well too (Skopar 21/3.5, Tessar 35/3.5, Elmar-M 50/2.8, MATE). Unsure what answer they can give to the MEV1 but better use the Leica adapter to detect coded lenses and trigger magnification. Too bad autozoom is not possible with it though.

My point is that similar sets can be made with for instance the CL making the M EV1 a bit redundant unless one insists on one letter: M

There is much more to using M-EV1 over CL than just the letter M :). But, yeah, CL is light and fun to use. Glad you found a way to revive it.

Sure it does. It could not detect 6bit coded lenses otherwise.

Read my post please. This thread is about a CL that cannot communicate with L lenses any more, so it had to be converted to an M camera. Thus it is an EVF M mount camera now. That is the whole point. It is a more compact, lighter and Basrnack-shaped M camera with EVF now. As SrMi points out, it lacks some of the features of the M-EV1 like Perspective Control and crop lines, and has older (sensor) technology , but that is mostly due to anno domini. It is exactly the EV1 concept in a more handy form.

Sorry for your CL but i missed where you said its electronic contacts are dead. Sure the MEV1 has no electronic contact, the same way as other M cameras have none, but even without such contacts, the CL is hardly more an M-mount camera than a Sony with an adapter. It is the M mount that makes the MEV1 an M camera and it is the roller cam it shares with other Ms that allows for autozoom the CL is lacking, altough its upper dials are handy TBH.

If it wasn’t an M mount camera it would be a non-mount camera now. It is fascinating how a simple passive piece of metal like a small adapter can make an immense emotional impact on some people. But I guess it is something like Buddha’s tooth or a piece of the Cross.
Strictly speaking an M camera can have any mount, as long as it has a Messsucher. The M only applies to the to the view-rangefinder and has nothing to do with the mount. And is is quite practical if it can accept lenses made for the system. In this light the EV1 is not an M camera. But let’s be nice to Leica and allow a bit of nostalgia in their naming.
