Like most people here, I shoot almost entirely in raw and process in lightroom because processing is an equal part of image creation to capturing the file. Fact is though that unless you’ve got it wrong or are really pushing the dynamic range capabilities of your camera, the difference is far smaller than we like to think. The depth of a jpeg file is much broader than either screen or paper can show and if (a big if it’s true) the colours are good in the file, we rarely need the extra size of a raw file.

Shooting jpgs and work on these with the fotos app is such an elegant solution that would never have crossed my mind: first discard a lot of information from this excellent sensor then work on it with the conceivably worst editing software. Truly a faster way to market.

I shoot JPEG and DNG files (18 and 60 mp) simultaneously, which I transfer via the camera's Bluetooth to the Leica Photos app on my phone. From there, straight to the processing process (of the DNG files), using the Capture One software.

Maybe it is elegant but it begs the question: why spend a small fortune on one of the best cameras in the world and then throw away half the data by using a lossy compression?

For the same reason people buy large and expensive fast cars. It won’t get you across London any quicker than a Fiat 500 but folks like them.

I can’t advocate shooting just JPEG because I don’t but sit me down and ask me if I need to shoot raw and the honest answer is less than 5% of the time.

Yes but the difference is that you can use a Leica to its capability and a Ferrari in London you cannot.

There is definitely a place for using the Fotos app. I like to shoot raw + small jpg so that I can on occasion download the small jpg while out and about. Then I can send out the jpg, maybe to someone I just met and photographed. Once or twice I did use Fotos to pull down the raw and then edit it in LR mobile.

Any, since running Fotos is the easiest way to geotag images, why not try some of its other capabilities?

Remarkably consistent, with a couple of exceptions, Leica users are on raw and not users of Fotos. My guess is if the question was posted in the SL or perhaps Q forums, likely similar responses. So Leica’s work on fotos, lux grip etc are to appeal to a new audience? D-lux shooters?

As above really - I always shoot RAW, but I do use Fotos occasionally when I'm away just to get an image onto my phone to send to family etc.

I do the same for SL and Q.

The RAW files are so good to work with that using JPEGs seems somehow unsatisfying.  A bit like eating a good steak without seasoning.
