o2mpx Posted August 30 Share #1  Posted August 30 Advertisement (gone after registration) Curious how popular M shooters are on jpgs and Fotos workflow vs the more traditional raw with post edits. Thanks.
Advertisement Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Hi o2mpx, Take a look here Raw or Jpg with your M with Fotos. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Smogg Posted August 30 Share #2 Â Posted August 30 I use Fotos only for firmware updates.
lct Posted August 30 Share #3 Â Posted August 30 I edit jpegs but never used Fotos sorry.
Tpau17 Posted August 30 Share #4  Posted August 30 I only create DNG files with my M10—I don't actually work with the Fotos.app from Leica, but import them from the card into CaptureOne.

Besides I am using LR.
250swb Posted August 30 Share #6 Â Posted August 30 I'm sorry, but you bought an M11 presumably looking for great image quality? So why even contemplate using JPEGS, should it even be a question?
JNK100 Posted August 30 Share #7 Â Posted August 30 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have never used Fotos and use only raw.
LocalHero1953 Posted August 30 Share #8 Â Posted August 30 I don't use Fotos with my Leica cameras, and only shoot raw (or film).
LeicaR10 Posted August 30 Share #9 Â Posted August 30 O2mpx, Â I never use JPEGs or Fotos on my M or SL cameras. Â For me, it only complicates the process of creating photographs. Â I only shoot DNG, import via SD card and edit in Light Room. Â r/ Mark
Dazzajl Posted August 30 Share #10  Posted August 30 Like most people here, I shoot almost entirely in raw and process in lightroom because processing is an equal part of image creation to capturing the file. Fact is though that unless you’ve got it wrong or are really pushing the dynamic range capabilities of your camera, the difference is far smaller than we like to think. The depth of a jpeg file is much broader than either screen or paper can show and if (a big if it’s true) the colours are good in the file, we rarely need the extra size of a raw file.
didier Posted August 30 Share #11 Â Posted August 30 I only shoot RAW. If I happen to download a pic on my iPhone or iPad through FOTOS, it is easy to process it quickly with the LR mobile App and export it in .jpg Didier
ApoVision Posted August 30 Share #12  Posted August 30 Shooting jpgs and work on these with the fotos app is such an elegant solution that would never have crossed my mind: first discard a lot of information from this excellent sensor then work on it with the conceivably worst editing software. Truly a faster way to market.
jaapv Posted August 30 Share #13  Posted August 30 Maybe it is elegant but it begs the question: why spend a small fortune on one of the best cameras in the world and then throw away half the data by using a lossy compression? 4 1
jeri Posted August 30 Share #14 Â Posted August 30 (edited) I shoot JPEG and DNG files (18 and 60 mp)Â simultaneously, which I transfer via the camera's Bluetooth to the Leica Photos app on my phone. From there, straight to the processing process (of the DNG files), using the Capture One software. Edited August 30 by jeri

It won’t get you across London any quicker than a Fiat 500 but folks like them.  I can’t advocate shooting just JPEG because I don’t but sit me down and ask me if I need to shoot raw and the honest answer is less than 5% of the time.
lct Posted August 30 Share #16 Â Posted August 30 Photography is a subjective matter. If you like the results you get with jpegs or whatever technique, nobody can argue against that.

Andrew2000 Posted August 31 Share #18 Â Posted August 31 There is definitely a place for using the Fotos app. I like to shoot raw + small jpg so that I can on occasion download the small jpg while out and about. Then I can send out the jpg, maybe to someone I just met and photographed. Once or twice I did use Fotos to pull down the raw and then edit it in LR mobile. Any, since running Fotos is the easiest way to geotag images, why not try some of its other capabilities?
o2mpx Posted August 31 Author Share #19  Posted August 31 Remarkably consistent, with a couple of exceptions, Leica users are on raw and not users of Fotos. My guess is if the question was posted in the SL or perhaps Q forums, likely similar responses. So Leica’s work on fotos, lux grip etc are to appeal to a new audience? D-lux shooters? Gateway77 Posted August 31 Share #20 Â Posted August 31 As above really - I always shoot RAW, but I do use Fotos occasionally when I'm away just to get an image onto my phone to send to family etc. I do the same for SL and Q. The RAW files are so good to work with that using JPEGs seems somehow unsatisfying. Â A bit like eating a good steak without seasoning.
