Exactly; and it is (more or less) a legal EU requirement as mentioned in the release notes.

Instead of putting this secure format in the format menu (with the risk of accidentally activating it)  IMHO it would have been better to place it in the Camera Reset menu.

Well, it does not matter to activate the secure formatting . .

Both M11-D and M11-M updated via SD card method, no problems....and all profiles were preserved despite me forgetting to off-load and save them beforehand.

Appreciate the ability to format the internal storage, not that I use it.........but it's good to know that can be done in-camera now.

Perhaps useless or less useful for some, but useful for others as it appears it might have resolved the issue of ‘internal memory full’ documented here:

If they did what they documented, secure erase is not relevant. Now, if the normal erase is a quick file tables erase only, then yes it would help but a secure erase is way more than that. It doesnt just wipe every sector and uses drive firmware to zero the space save for optimization and wear leveling algorithms. I can't imagine why writing to those "sectors" would take long as they don't are a small area compared to the overall drive. If  leica are writing every sector like a traditional drive secure erase that would be bad!

Glad you issue is fixed but I suspect it coincidental not due to the "actual" secure erase

Having screwed up the file numbering system twice now on the last two upgrades (user error) are there any downsides to not doing the camera reset Leica recommends?

I didn't think the reset recommended included numbering and wireless, just the rest

Reset asked me if I wanted to reset numbering along with a few other questions.  I must have fat-fingered my answer as my first test shot after update was numbers 00001.  I moved the SD card to  my computer and re-named the file to one more than the last shot I took before updating.  Taking a second test shot after moving the SD card back to the camera resulted in my numbering being restored.

You get to choose. I messed up last time and reset the numbering by mistake. I don't recall seeing the option but it must have been there. First time I did an update I lost all my settings!

Oh wow! Wish I'd known that when I screwed up last time. Thanks for the tip.

Updated two M11-P bodies using the same SD card. One of the bodies automatically restarted after the firmware update, the other did not. I switched it off and on manually. Both show latest firmware. Wonder why this inconsistency. Did camera reset on both after the update as advised.

Apparently, the problem when with an empty media, occupied by 20% and says the memory is over is solved, well, let's see, really m11p full formatting was about 75 minutes, a large amount of memory, it feels like they put windows =)))

Secure formatting is only needed when selling the camera.

As a means of camera maintenance and hygiene, why not regularly

My M11 took about 7 minutes
