Switch to back to Leica from Canon camera body advice. Getting lenses now though before more tariffs.

I have sold all of my Canon gear as it is great but too heavy and too cumbersome, and I never bring it on holiday or outings.  My most used camera system that brought me the greatest reward in the past has been the Leica M system.

I am planning to buy 2 or 3 new M lenses before August 1st and avoid possible tariff increases.  Namely the 35mm 1.4 and the 50mm 1.4.  Maybe the 90mm 2.0 as well.

The question of which body is the dilemma.

I love the look of the M11-P safari and I would get that M camera most likely.   I would likely trade in and take a loss though for the M11-V which may be just on the horizon.

I can get a cheaper, but still very nice M10-R.

Or get a much cheaper adapted Sony a7cr or a Nikon ZF and use that camera until the M11-V is released.

I currently wear glasses 100 percent of the time and cannot see well at all without them so an EVF is very compelling for me.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

The M11-V is still a big unknown, but if it keeps the same form-factor as the M11, it is unlikely to bring an improved eye-point, so how useable it is with glasses remains to be seen.

The 90/1.5 other than being extremely expensive, is very un-M like; 2.2 lbs, large and depth of field at that aperture is impractical / almost impossible to focus/ keep everything in the desired plane - it’s probably best on a. SL3 tethered to a large monitor in a studio.

I’m sure US tariffs won’t remain in force forever.

Have you considered a Q?

An EVF M may or may not appear at some time but at the moment it is pie in the sky. I would not base any decision on a phantom.

Regarding glasses, i've honestly found this to be a non issue personally.  I also wear glasses 100% of the time and even the 28mm framelines aren't an issue to see but i do admit they are definitely the more difficult to use but you quickly get use to it.  I have the visoflex 2 as well (that I seldom use) and it doesn't really make things any better from a glasses perspective for me.

Anyways, i thought i would share my experience...

Thank you.  I am going with the m11-P safari.  Life is too short to worry about the next *best" release.  I just reviewed my leica catalog from my M9 in lightroom.  It was some of my best photography.  It is what inspires me. I had my camera with me we 24/7.  It bought out the passion.

Regards

Hi,

If you like 50mm and up my recommendation is to take LLL 1.4x magnifier with diopters or more expensive way visoflex 2 I have both, magnifier helps a lot and I can easily nail focus with my 50mm F1 lens or 90mm F2

If I didn't already have an M11 the safari edition would be my choice too.

On the 90mm: over the years, i have been testing them, buying and selling them. The Summicron 90 and the APO version are NOT recommended. heavy in the bag, hard to focus, even on the SL cameras. I went the Voigtlander route next, and wide open the underperformer. I finally saddled up a Summarit 90 f2.4, a perfect balance on image quality and weight, minimum focus is 0.90

Is this because of the rangefinder experience? If so, you will likely lose this in the M11-V (If it ever turns up)

If you really want the built in EVF and wish to wait it out in the hope it arrives this autumn (current speculation states October) then I would get something like an M10 which has somewhat plateaud in price. You can get most/all your money back fairly easily if you wish to buy the V. Buying an M11 now with the intention of possibly selling it in a few months is not the best financial move imo. I would hazard a guess that you will get a fair few on the market at the time the V is released, which will of course dilute the asking price during the period around initial release.

Depending on how bad your eyesight, Leica sells diopter lenses for M cameras.   My right eye is -1.25 and I added a - 1.5 diopter lens to my OVF and it works great.

I currently own the latest 28mm Summicron ASPH III, 35mm APO Summicron, 50mm Summilux ASPH II and 90mm APO Summicron.   I'm glad I have all 4.   If I had to get rid of one it would be the 28mm as I use that primarily when I am doing "hunting" street shooting and "from the hip" zone focusing and want a wide field of view and DOF.  But I don't do that style of shooting often.  The remaining 3 are also very different from each other, but if I could only keep 2, the one I would definitely keep is the 90mm APO as I see the 35mm and 50mm more similar in use case.

Because an M11 dynamic range is so great, I see the extra stop of light available in the Summilux of value only for bokeh reasons vs. dim light situations.  But the bokeh difference between the 35mm APO and 50mm Summilux are already very different... and then there are the close focus considerations and it's impact on bokeh.

I have an M11-D but because of my close focus lenses (3 of the 4) I use a Visoflex 2 more than I care to admit.   I really dislike LCD viewfinders on a back of a camera for many reasons, so I much rather have the Visoflex 2 option.  I also have a Q3 43 and my use case for that is much different than an M camera.  I don't think I would buy an M with an EVF.   Focusing with the rangefinder patch I find to be much more quick and accurate than using an EVF.

OP, good luck with your lens buying decision... you really will need at least 4 lenses to get the most out of your M body.

I just ordered the LLL 1.4X with the built in diopter.   I can likely just use my glasses for the 35mm 1.4 with no magnifier.  I agree the rangefinder focusing has to be much faster then an EVF.  When I sold my M9,  I thought the autofocus Canon would be better with my children and action shots etc.  I did enjoy the whole M system in the past, I had this camera with me all the time. Even mundane outings.  I plan to pick up my kit tomorrow namely the M11-P Safari and the chrome 35mm 1.4 ASPH and the chrome 50mm 1.4 ASPH.

I'm not real familiar with that diopter... what I do know is the Leica Diopter sizing is different for the M10 and M11 vs. the prior models, so you may want to ensure fitment for the M11 you are getting.

Nice choice with the M11 Safari, nice lenses too.
However, I find 35 Summilux FLE & 75 APO Summicron to be a more compact solution to the 35-50-90 trio.
With a little footwork one can fill the missing 50 or 90. The 75 renders very similar to the 50 Summilux and much better than the 90 APO Summicron.

28 Summilux, 50 Summilux and 75 Apo which is a very nice, small and sharp lens which I can focus without the visoflex. Had the 90 apo but never got really friendly with it - angle too small. Normally take two bodies, one with 28 and other with 50 (most recent version with close focus). All three lenses have a fantastic unswirly no-cats-eyes bokeh.

edit: 28 (not 24)

Hello,

I have an update.

I just got back from KEH camera and traded my extensive Canon gear.

I was able to demo an M11-P and was very happy.  The sample shots I took where very easy.  I already had years of M experience about 12 years ago.  I truly regret selling my Leica system oh so many years ago.

I bought got the M11-p safari New.  The lenses where used and I saved thousands on the used lenses.  The 28 and the 50 lenses are the latest 2020's updated ones.  The 90mm has not changed in years.

The Leica 28mm Summicron ASPH (like new+)

The Leica 50mm Summilux ASPH (like new+)

The 90mm APO Summicron APO (ex+)

I have owned all of these lenses in the past and they where my main kit,

I just finished setting up my user profiles for my preference in Camera.  Once I look through the range finder,  I can safely say I will not be needing an EVF upgrade.

I am shocked that the Camera did not include a battery charger.

It is normal nowadays. EU regulations require USBC charging as a standard and no chargers included to encourage people to have only one and not a drawerful of different types. Reduces waste.

Enjoy your new set. It sounds like a well-thought out one.

For all cameras an external USB-C battery dock charger should be included ( no need for a AC to USB-C mains block )
