Taken in the pedestrianised cutural quarter in the centre of Southampton.

Leica M7 + 35mm Summarit f2.5 with Kodak Tri-X which was lab processed and then scanned using a Plustek 8200i and Silverfast software. Cropped from about one-third of original and post-processed using Lightroom Classic.

Hello Gerry,

I'm planning on getting an M7. Have you ever had any problems with yours? Can you give me some tips? I've already done a bit of research on the subject. The improved MP search appears to have been included since 2003. Optical film detection was also added later. I haven't been able to determine whether the problem some people seem to have had, where after changing film, the ISO dial is set to automatic and a lens with the cap on, the shutter button locks and the camera needs to be serviced, still exists.

The M7 is a truly fabulous film camera. I have had one (2ndhand) for 10 or more years. Never a problem and I have taken it to the Sahara, Antarctic and myrid other places in between. I call it my Automatic M6. Simply because it has 'Auto aperture priority' setting, which gives it a superior edge over the otherwise fabulous M6. Like any camera, it can go wrong. So the usual cautions apply, but apart from that, I would not hesitate to buy one.

There is no doubt at all in my mind that the M7 is one of the finest film cameras ever made but I made the decision to get rid of mine when I traded it in to buy a M240 to replace my M9 which I knew would be out of action for some time whilst it was back to Leica for repairs. I have since bought a used M6 to get back into film photography and (with hindsight) should never have got rid of the M7. However the original M6 (i.e. not the reincarnation) is an equally fine camera and it's price is proving it is a better investment I think.

You will not be disappointed with an M7!
