Long gone are the times that Leica lenses were built by gnomes in caves deep in the Bavarian mountains

Are you really sure? ... one of the red dots on my equipment looks like a tiny fingerprint 😉

I am so happy that the SL System is part of the L-Mount Alliance so that I can use those different offerings. I have some glas from Panasonic, Sigma and Leica, use an S1RII at the moment, investigate in a Laowa 55mm Tilt-Shift, play with the idea of using the S-Lenses via adapter (meaning ... a used SL2 could be useful) 😄 ... in my case it is all a hobby, but  the latest bodies made the Sony I still used for sports photography (competitive table-tennis) obsolete. Happy L-mount camper here 🙂

To add to the thread: I have no interest in a 28-70 mm at all, this range I cover with the Pana 24-70

Best regards

My question still exists, what lenses do you want Leica to release, you seem to bemoan the lack of 'true' Leica lenses but don't offer suggestions of what these special or unique lenses should be.

I guess that in reality you don't actually know what you want you just don't want what Leica are doing at the moment.

Anyway I've had enough and have images to take so I'm out of here. Thanks for the discussion.

How about A SL Summilux line of primes. Version II of the 24-90mm, which is showing its age. Heck the already announced 24mm Summicron would be nice. I agree with Vkdev, I didn't buy into Leica to shoot rebranded Sigma's. Sigma's own L lenses are cheaper, lighter, and just as good as the rebranded lenses.

Choice is good, right?

Strikes me as pointless, unless I’ve missed something.  Giving up the 24 capability at the wide end.

I’m perfectly happy with my Leica (S*gma) 24-70 VE.
Maybe the pixel-peepers will subsequently  prove me wrong.

Solves a problem I don't have. I have the 24-90 and use it intensively.
I'm sure it will be great for some, especially as a 'kit' lens for a starter in the SL system.
I started with the original SL with just the 24-90 and, when it became available, the 90-280. It was a long time after that when I bought some (Apo) primes. I could probably still manage perfectly well with just the two zooms.

I will be very interested because of the weight savings compared to my 24-70.  As I age, weight makes a big difference while walking around.  I will continue to use my 21 mm M lens for wide use.  Now I will need to decide if it is worth upgrading my SL2-s to the SL3-s for the bundle savings.  Cheers

Leica's page emphasizes the kit-lens aspect, so it's for new customers rather than those who already have a similar zoom.

I would have preferred something even smaller, like Panasonic's kit zooms, but there's so much static whenever Leica releases a variable aperture lens that they must have preferred to play it safe.

It's roughly 300g lighter: 613g w/hood, vs. 906g. That's a significant difference.

is nobody going to mention that it is another Sigma-rebranded lens?

I use 24-90 and 24-70, there is a place for both of them.

the 28-70 is the smaller lighter and more affordable lens, I can see it is a good lens for people to get started with.

in competition in size and weight is the PANA 24-60 2.8. To me, 24 mm is more useful than 28, but I would have to test the optical weakness of both at the wide and tele in real life.

Historically sigma lenses perform better optically, but the PANA lenses gain extra functionality combined with PANA cameras, like better IBIS, power zoom in video to 2,x and button control.

An APO macro that will blow the socks off all other macros.  Like they did with my 100 APO for the R that I still use.

The SL3-S with this lens (as the kit announced today) is about £500 cheaper than a Q43.

Which would appear to make it a “bargain”, in Leica terms.

On the previous (pre-release)_ tread about this lens I was quite adamant that I did not need it as i have the 24-70 (sigma DN II) Whch outpreforms the leica version.  This said, as I sober up a little, IF the optical performance and fast focus is at par or better than the 24-70 then, I have to admit, it will end up in my bag based on size.  Waiting on the reviews and, perhaps, on playiong with it on hand a bit to see if it makes a difference.

In theory i don’t want to care about weight and size ver performance, but, the 24-90, despite it’s incredible and unique space in the lineup ended up being traded for the 24-70.  And the summilux sl does not get used as much as I’d like to (while summilux 50 is my got to on M above APO, Cron etc)

So, yes, I’ll take a good look at this one.

My combo Q3 28mm together with the SL3 + 75mm APO F2 basically provides a FL from 25mm (Actual FL of the Q3) until approximately 135mm with the great cropping possibilities of both cameras. And this several stops faster vs. F2.8, better bokeh and I have a backup camera with me. Not to speak from the overall image quality vs. the zoom. The new 28-70mm would only be interesting for Video in my case but there I use the lighter 20-60mm Panasonic on the gimbal.

A 50mm-150mm like Sony showed recently would be great...
