I've previously bought minty limited edition things and keep them in the cabinet (in some cases even having a second, 'user' copy in a different/standard variation).  

Generally it just felt a bit wrong, and a waste to have nice things you've spent money on sitting there unused.  

Since in your case (OP) the price difference is not much, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, use it and enjoy it. You can't really put a price (i.e. versus depreciation for usage damage) on that enjoyment but it seems a far more appropriate way to treat these nice objects.

If the feeling was more “No never use such a thing! Allow your cat to gaze upon the lens’s beauty but not to have its image captured by it for you shall destroy the lens!” then I might have just bought the standard version and left the rarer one for a collector. 
 

Now I won’t. 

It will alway be worth more than a standard version in similar condition. I’d go as far as to say that it sounds like you have found a really good deal for a limited edition version at a 500 dollar premium above standard retail.

What is the rate of equivalence with cat photos?

 

 Dogs are obviously much better than cats, provided we’re not talking silly dogs in handbags, so I think a dog photo is easily worth ten cat photos.

Not using it destroys any inherent value a lens has in the first place, imo.

Might as well just buy a chunk of gold and put it in the cabinet to gaze upon, as there's nothing else one can do with it beyond that.

I picked this up today, along with a 28 Summilux. 
 

Both are technically secondhand but to be honest there’s not a mark on either to indicate that they’ve ever been mounted. 
I paid the equivalent of US$10,100 for the Apo which I thought was a good buy.

 

 It’s very heavy and solid being all brass  but the feel of it is like opening and closing the doors on a Rolls Royce!
