In my Celia Fogg bag I place the camera on its base plate. This leaves enough room for a lens or small flash in the divided section. That being said,

I try to wear my camera when going out. I like it to ride high, about mid sternum.

Position depends entirely on your bag size/design. Also what else may be in the bag. Do you use a 'proper' lens hood? That will take up room and control the ergonomics of the packing of the bag. My M goes 'lens up', 'lens down' 'lens sideways', depending on which lens and which bag. Use a combo that fits easily and facilitates easy removal.

Foe actual useage of an M camera. I prefer a wrist strap and film winder lever together. A very comfortable combo. For hands free, I use a Peak Design cross body strap.

... and some photographers prefer otherwise... I seem to recognize ChatGPT's deepest thought :D Just kidding but quoting your source could help.

Most cameras go into bags with one end of the camera or other facing down, and lens out to the side. Not sure how else it can be done really (with most bags). And no lens caps! Use filters. Lens caps, esp on a rangefinder, are just a comedy skit waiting to happen.

If it is a MP or M6 camera, then lens out, otherwise the bag sides could press on the shutter release and drain the battery.

( Edit I see the post is in the Leica M Type 240/262 forum - just proves how wrong Leica were with the 'Leica M' + Typ designation ! )

I put my camera in portrait position in the bag, so the lens is horizontal.

I just chuck it in, usually on its side. Sometimes the bag is even padded. Usually there is a filter on the lens, or cap or both but not always!

20 years without sweating this with no problems, not about to start now.

Appreciate these cameras / lenses are expensive but it is important to remember that they are only tools. The real value lies in our own creativity and experience. How we transport the camera from A to B, how we place it in a bag or how we carry it round our neck or on our wrist is merely a personal choice. Don't sweat it and enjoy making photos and challenging yourself.

I just drop my camera into the bag and it ends up sitting where it does. Never really considered whether there is an optimal way to put it in. To extract it I usually find the strap and tug. Mind you my cameras aren't in 'collectible' condition so you might want to ignore my methodology.

Just a nonsense question. Put it in a bag in whatever position is convenient for you, or wear it on your shoulder, or carry it in your hand, and stop worrying about it. Oh, and learn how to spell the word 'lens' while you're about it.

Tell that to my iPhone which automatically corrected the spelling of lens to lense.
Who’s worrying…🥸

Nothing if that’s how you like it, other than the fact that this looks like it was not written by an actual human.

The effort heuristic is a good rule when dealing with AI - which is to say much of it is best ignored since generating took just the tiniest smidgen of effort to produce, a smidgen that barely surpasses that of no effort.

Anyways, but carrying a dslr is really a bit of a different thing. And part of why carrying an M is more appealing.
