Pleas Colint, I know you have a MM9 (me too..) I'd like to know if M11 has same recovery shadow and black zone. What about the B&W on M11 ? I need a new camera because sometime I need a color camera. Do you think M11 is a competitive with MM9 ?

I've not tried making M11 images black and white, just because the M9M is so close to analogue black and white. If I were starting now, with just the M9M, and wanted a colour M, I'd consider an M10R.

Good to hear positive things about the M11. Thinking of getting one used.
Was it firmware that resolved the freezing issues - or was it the introduction of the M11P?  Just trying to see if the used M11s on the market have been offloaded by dissatisfied owners. Thanks.

Hi Sergius, I had an M9M for years and now an M11P that I shoot often in B&W. The files are much more robust with the M11 and give you a fair bit more latitude. The M9M though has a look that cannot be beat or matched by any other digital M imo. Very subjective but it just has an organic look that pleases me very much.

For colour shooting, an M11 or an M10 generation body will serve you well. Happy to send you DNG samples to play with if you wish to explore your options prior to spending a load of cash. I also own an M10R if you wish to compare between the two.

Just carry M11-P and Q3 back from few trips, I'm glad choose the right gear without facing any issues. Unfortunately I will let go the Q3, it's compact but the output not my favourite.

In the almost 3 years of owning my M11, I've had two freezes. Always kept it on the latest firmware, ran a fast SD Card and not had an issue.

More people need to share their experiences on what a great camera it is.

Only reason I sold it was because the M11-P Safari came out and been no issues there either.

It is (now) a very good camera in my view.

Any downsides it has are really inherent in the platform rather than specific to the M11. We must assume users can live with those since they bought the camera.

Having had a black aluminium version and now a Safari brass version, I’m much more content with the solidity of the brass - purely a personal preference of course.

One concern I have is the ever-increasing prices. At all but NZ$19,000 for a body it’s starting to exceed the prices of some cars! There are several lenses that reach NZ$25,000 now

In 1998 my M6 cost £2650 (about NZ$8,000 using the exchange rate of the time).

Of course, we all know that Leica isn’t a camera that has ever been cheap. However the M11 costs 33% of the average take home pay in NZ.

Now we know why the total number of Safari bodies allocated to NZ was allegedly ….2.

It made me realize how many different ways there are to set up the camera – and how strongly that affects the overall shooting experience and handling.

Personally, I find configuring the M11 significantly more complicated and less intuitive than with the M10-R. The structure of info profiles and custom settings feels harder to access and less logically arranged. Saving settings as user profiles is, in my view, unnecessarily convoluted.

The takeaway for me: I’ll stick to as few profiles as possible and set the camera to behave as closely as possible to a film camera – simple, direct, and focused on the essentials.

In terms of stability, I’ve been using firmware 2.21. I did experience a single freeze with that version, but overall it has been quite stable since. I haven’t installed the latest update yet, so I can’t speak to any improvements it may bring.

The M11-P is an excellent camera.  I’ve had it for slightly over a year, always updated to the current firmware, taken it on several trips abroad in a variety of climates and don’t ever recall a freeze.  If there ever was, it must have been an easy to fix with a power recycle, as none latch in the memory.  Honestly, it has been a joy to use every time.  I can’t speak for any earlier M-series, but its menu seems intuitive enough to me (having previously used, and still using, the Q2 and Q2M).  If I miss a particular function, I can’t think of anything, as it’s a deliberate choice to eschew all the modcons.  The M11-P is not a Q2, it’s not a X-T2, and it’s certainly not a D5 or Z9; it’s an entirely different user experience that I’ve had to work at.  That’s part of the fun.  Highly recommended to slow down the picture taking experience.

Yes. It's actually a really good camera.

It's just not good a fit for the user brought up with contemporary expectations as to where the camera's responsibilities end and the user's responsibilities begin.

I've got a Mont Blanc Diplomat, handed down to me by a guy who wrote, literally, millions of words with it.

Its spelling checker absolutely sucks...

The M11 is a fantastic camera, there's no denying that. The earlier firmware/Leica app versions were a quite beta-ish in my experience for such an expensive camera, but everything seems pretty much ironed out now and I find the camera and app both do what I expect without issue. I've not had a freeze for months and even if I got one now I'd deem it in the realms of 'acceptable' as long as it's only a few times a year. I'd definitely recommend it and there's not any camera (other than the M10-R which is on the same level for me) that I would swap over to. The only camera I could see me changing over to might be the M12... :)

I agree.

At the risk of creating a hostage to fortune for myself (!!) I struggle to imagine what they could add in an M12 that would be essential enough to make me consider buying one at the price it will be - inevitably higher than the current camera.

It’s possible that they’ll create something so stunning that I cannot resist, but unlikely.

As things stand, I’d be more likely to get a second M11 body in mint used condition and probably it would be a Monochrom.

All things being equal I’d wait for the M12-P.

Other funds if available would go into lenses probably. I want to re-acquire the 35 Apo for a start.

Improvements I’d like to see would be better white balance, film emulations, Hasselblad like colour fidelity possibly IBIS if it could be done without detriment to the battery performance etc. Can’t think of much else really.

I was at first sceptical of the USB C charging. But now after two years I have found it to be a revolution …. Would not be without it , also saves on taking a charger on trips. As for it being on the bottom , easy , turn the camera upside down !!

The very fact that we need more than 56 posts to assert the m11 is a great camera makes this claim very debatable.

What's wrong with people expressing they are happy with the camera, how many posts are in the film forum saying "I love my M6", "I love my M7", "i Love my M4" etc.? Is that debatable too?

Absolutely – the M11 is a highly capable camera. But when I compare it to how previous generations used Leica gear, I can’t help but reflect a bit more critically.

My grandfather bought an M3 in the early 1960s. That single camera served him faithfully for decades — without firmware updates, without compatibility issues, and certainly without needing to budget for the next model every few years. It was built for permanence.

Nowadays, we're seeing high investment in increasingly shorter cycles. And while technological refinement is part of every industry, the pace and pricing at which Leica is moving raises questions — especially when the upgrades often come with trade-offs (e.g., battery life vs IBIS, EVF limitations, file sizes, etc.).

Would an M12 be interesting? Possibly. Would it be essential? Unlikely. Improvements like better color profiles, white balance, or even internal IBIS are welcome — but they don’t change the core experience dramatically for many of us who value the simplicity and tactile focus of the M system.

Personally, I’d rather put the money into lenses — tools that age gracefully and shape the image far more directly than most digital body updates do.

Just my two cents — and yes, I’m still enjoying my M11 (when it’s not tempting me to reflect on analog days too much), and I feel the same way about my M6.

People often say film is expensive today, but truth be told, film was always expensive. The difference? Back then, you didn’t shoot endless frames of throwaway moments. You thought, you composed, you made the shot count.

And when I look at the price of a new M11 — let alone a future M12 for well over €9,000 — I can't help but calculate:
That’s hundreds of rolls of film, beautifully developed and scanned, and years of shooting with a mechanical camera that doesn’t need firmware fixes or charging.

Digital has its place, no doubt. But the simplicity, the intention, and yes — the joy — of shooting film with a Leica M is still unmatched.
