I’m looking to carry some M lenses inside a sling bag or messenger bag. But I feel the leather containers Leica provides are a bit too bulky for everyday use. Any suggestions like soft pouches that one can quickly and easily drop them into?

I’ve also got a Peak Design Sling bag that seems to work well but the with how short the M lenses are, there seems to be a bit of wasted vertical space. I tried the OP/Tech double lens mount cap but that was a failure as they don’t fit every M lens due to some having a longer flange.

I use many different configurations, depending on which camera, lenses, how many etc.

My needs range from one camera, one lens, not often, to two bodies and three lenses.

Bag and pouches to suit.

The image below shows  an M6 wit 50mm Cron mounted and a 75mm Cron inside the bag, which is a FOGG (Ver. ?). Beside it is a LowPro belt pouch that has a 90mm Cron in it. I can add .another belt pouch that holds another M6 or 7. This combo is very compact and easily worn comfortably.

Each individual really need s to experiment for themselves, because what suits me may not suit you.

Basic intent to protect the components from banging together and causing damage. The only exception I have observed to that are war correspondents and press photographers, whom I assume do not pay for their own gear.

I just drop them into the camera bag, if I know I may need the lens again soon I may not even put the lens caps back on. Being out taking photos should be as fuss free as possible, buy a big enough bag with enough compartments and make it easy to change lenses. When I've finished for the day I tidy the inside of my bag and put filters away and lens caps on and go home.

In Dresden is a shop/factory, where one can order Christmas bread (Stollen). The Stollen is packed in a fabric sack. I carry my (two) lenses in these bags and all together in a backpack. By the way, the Christmas breads from "Emil Reimann" are excellent.😊

I have several Lowepro bags, some for camera only, some for camera and accessories and i have nothing to complain.

  • 2 bags for the Q2, a small one for only the Q2 and a slightly bigger one for Q2 and Elpro52 and a Speedlite flash
  • 1 top loading colt style for my SL2 who fit also the big Sigma 14mm and i use this inside another backpack, sling or messenger bag
  • 1 Taktik 160 AW II messenger bag who fit SL2 with attached 28mm or 105mm lens, and the 14mm and either the 28mm or 105mm.
  • Attached with the molle system the Tactic line has are either a bottle holder, a lens change pouch and a small puoch for my M39 lenses
  • all above from LowePro

Not sure how known, used and available Lowepro is in US, here they are widely used and work very well, have good protection and are sturdy made.

Another option would be to use the bag you like and buy one of those Camera Cubes inserts who fit the bag you have, a very hand solution. I use that sometimes when i don't want to carry a obvious camera bag with me so i use a normal small sling or messenger bag.

I use also camera/lens wrap fabrics, my M39 lenses are wrapped in them and i have two bigger, thicker ones i could wrap the cameras but rarely use tham as i would have to unwrap first.

Much will depend on what your bags are like.

My bags are small and well-padded as-is so my solution is simply to use the small cotton fabric draw-string pouches which are used to contain accessories in Leica's camera boxes. They take up, in effect, no space at all and give 'spare' lenses as much protection as required. They are also long enough and wide enough to cope with all my M-mount lenses barring the 135;

These days I tend to go out with my 4 bodies each with a lens attached, I have a jacket from Paramo that has large pockets and I can fit a body with lens attached into 4 of them.

That looks like a sure way to stop your jacket flapping around in the wind !

1. Be careful, they appear to have framed some kind of summoning circle

2. I can only imagine that when you go out taking photos it's like the lobby scene from the Matrix

the leather containers

I carry smaller lenses in fabric pouches so I can put two in a 'compartment' together without worry.

I understood that long term storage in leather could encourage fungus, but that maybe an old wives (or photographers) tale.

Generally I carry lenses in a camera bag relying on the dividers to provide segregation. Other times if it’s just two small lenses the lenses for the day, one on camera and one naked in a pocket.

I noticed Oberwerth launched a range of leather lens rolls recently, though looks much the same size as a Leica lens case, but got me thinking a large leather chamois cut to size would offer much the same knock protection at a fraction of the price for a few lenses.
