Beemermark Posted February 23 Share #1 Posted February 23 Advertisement (gone after registration) A different aside. I have all three. I need to get rid of least one. I have a 50 year love affair with the M4. The epitome of craftsmanship. The MP is a 2002 0.58x finder which suits me fine as I shoot nothing wider than a 50mm. The M7 has AE which I thinks is tops for street shooting. Worse decision I ever made was selling an M7 that had a 0.58x finder. All three cameras have recently been serviced my DAG. Advertisement Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Hi Beemermark, Take a look here M4, M7, MP which one. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mute-on Posted February 23 Share #2 Posted February 23 I’d never let go of a 0.58 VF M. FWIW I have a BP M4 and a 0.58 MP. No M7 (M2 instead). Take that for what you will, but I’ll never have to worry about complete loss of functionality if the electronics fail …
earleygallery Posted February 23 Share #3 Posted February 23 Are you desperate for the cash? In which case sell the most valuable one.
erl Posted February 23 Share #4 Posted February 23 If you don't need the money, don't sell any.
Beemermark Posted February 23 Author Share #5 Posted February 23 (edited) No I don't need cash but at my age I start to worry what I leave my estate (then again I dead, so I won't care). But seriously I just can't shoot enough film to justify all three. I mean I went on a shooting trip to day; do I take the M4, M7, MP or my IIA, IIIF or a myriad other bodies. I just need to get rid of some. I went with the MP today (which is a more recent acquisition) and I'm getting more used to the little diodes in finder - something I used to hate in Nikon bodies So maybe the M4 with the more usual VF and the MP? I find it hard to part with the M7 maybe the only Leica I purchased new. Edited February 23 by Beemermark
Qwntm Posted February 23 Share #6 Posted February 23 I agree, if you don't need the money don't sell any of them. No matter which one you sell you will regret it. Pick the one you want to shoot with the most and put the rest in a closet. A year from now if you don't think of them and really don't use any of them consider selling one, or not. The prices can only go up on these film bodies as they scarcer and more people realize that digital isn't even photography... 🙂
Mute-on Posted February 23 Share #7 Posted February 23 Advertisement (gone after registration) As others have said, if you don’t need the money (or the storage space), don’t sell any of them. Perhaps one (or some) of your bodies from another manufacturer can be moved on with less angst. I only have one rule for Leica lenses and film bodies … don’t sell. I’m happy to stick with that for now.

There is no rational justification for analogue photography, it is all about emotions. If you feel any morning in your life to take the M7 on your walk, hike or trip it would be your very personal decision, you’ll never have to justify. Replace M7 by an other camera you own and it would be valid exactly the same way. As long as you got the space to safely store them you never have to sell anything. Avoid the emotional pain and leave the burden to your successors. Edited February 23 by Helge
TomB_tx Posted February 23 Share #9 Posted February 23 I'm at a similar stage in life - realizing that before long our son will have to sort through our collection of "stuff" that he (and his) probably won't care about, including my M4 that I've treasured for over 57 years. We had to do the same with both sets of parents so we are starting to slim down, but family history and mementos aren't as important to the next generation. I never added an MP, but have the other film Ms and many Barnacks (and clones). An M7 was my most recent addition, and I like it a lot more than expected. But rather than selling, I'm still enjoying - and just processed a roll of "Wolfen" from the M7 yesterday. So I decided a different approach: gave my 1955 M3 DS to my son for Christmas, and each of the grandgirls a Pentax 17 to encourage an interest in film and real cameras instead of iPhones. This week for his birthday my son gets my M9 as a "training" companion to the M3 as it gives instant feedback on focusing and framing, etc. If these develop any interest I'll keep passing on some "inheritance" while I choose to. In the meantime that leaves my M10 without a digital backup... Time to start looking!
Danner Posted February 23 Share #10 Posted February 23 I'd sell the M7.

hilm3 Posted February 23 Share #12 Posted February 23 (edited) Gone through a similar process. Last summer I sold my M2, M3, two Barnaks, and a 135 M lens. I’ve kept my M7, M6, II F, and III F. I used the proceeds to buy a Q3. I also have an M-D and lots of lenses. I will go through the process again this summer. I have not regretted the sale of the M2 and M3, two cameras I thought I would never sell. What I use the most is Q3, M-D, and M7. The M6 will go to one of my sons who loves it. My other children have no interest in photography. The camera nearest to my heart is the M7. Edited February 23 by hilm3 Typos
BradS Posted February 24 Share #13 Posted February 24 When inflation is running high, it is best to hold on to hard assets. Keep 'em all. Select one or two bodies and a handful of lenses for use and pack the rest away for safe keeping.
