lct Posted March 25 Share #1041 Posted March 25 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Both RF and sans-RF M cameras have been sold since the sixties. Why not in the 21st century? Their common points won't change: the M mount and M lenses. Edited March 25 by lct 1

An 'M' with an EVF instead would not be the same experience at all. By all means offer a new camera with an EVF but an SL with an adaptor meets this requirement admirably already in my view. I am happy to be an outlier!

frankchn Posted March 25 Share #1045 Posted March 25 (edited) I personally like an EVF M as an addition to the M line up and would consider one especially paired with my UWA lenses (SEM 18, SEM 21, Lux 21). The OVF is already pretty useless when framing with those lenses, and for the most part I can zone focus those lenses anyway. I have one, but I also want a thumb grip and I can't have both. Having the Visoflex stick out also makes it closer to the size of an SL3, and that is not ideal. If a new EVF camera launches it will be interesting to see how the size compares with the SL3 I think.

It also requires focusing with rangefinder before using it to frame (wide angles only).

Never did this so far. Focus magnication works fine for me, together with focus peaking if needed.

With a rangefinder, you simply move from infinity until the vertical lines coincides. But with magnification, you will be turning the focusing ring back and forth, gradually decreasing the amplitude, to accurately catch the focus. I can't think why it couldn't be the same size and shape as a regular M - that removing the optical viewfinder and rangefinder creates enough space for an EVF. I believe that the bigger the EVF the better the quality of the experience, but if they could do it in the smaller CL, they ought to be able to do it in the M. Again, the DOF is way too large with wide angles to be able to focus precisely.
Smogg Posted March 25 Share #1055 Posted March 25 And focus peaking is simply a mockery of accuracy in high-contrast lighting.

I am not happy with that type of guess-focusing. IIRC, Sean Reid has elaborated on this technique to properly focus with wide angles.

The focus plane is very thin, focus peaking will show much more being in focus, whereas it is not.
