enclosed an image with my S 70f2.5 @f4 and a 'find edges' version of the same image

I don't see any field curvature of relevance, I would say it's extremely flat

Have you tried shooting a landscape closer to infinity? It is pretty pronounced. It is late, so I am not going to find a sample image, but I can try to find it tomorrow. In my experience a minimum of 6.8 or f8 was required for good sharpness edge to edge in landscape images, and even then f11 was better. But there was very sharp detail at lower stops, just not flat acorss the frame.

to which Fuji GFX lenses are you referring to?

as far as I know there is only one single 'small' GF lens, the 50f3.5

all other GF (prime) lenses are 'normal' size and the required digital correction of distortion and vignetting is minimal

I can only speak lenses I have: 30mm f3.5 45mm f2.8 and 50mm f3.5. They all small compare to Leica S with slower aperture but all show significant vignette and strong cat eye at corner.

I would say the Fuji 30 and 45 are ‘normal’ and Leica S 30 and 45 are huge 😋

cat eye and vignette are related to size that’s true

I agree. S glasses are huge.

35/70/120 are my desert island set. They are just click on everything I care about a set of matching glasses.

there are so many superb FF glasses but none made the same emotion impact as these 3 S for me.

+1. If the Island stay accepts an additional lens, I would add S180. This seems to be an underrated/-used lens. Its not the easiest lens to use on S due to shutter movement, but it shines if the shutter shock doesn't ruin the sharpness. The image quality shows up on mirrorless cameras with electronic shutter like SLx and GFX.

Really feel-good images!

For a modern all-singing-all-dancing photo system, flaring and chromatic abberationso that you show a few posts up would be deemed unacceptable. At the same time, when things line up, images from the S-system shine.

I dont have the walls overpopulated by own photos, but it's quite common for guess to stop and comment on photos from the S-system. Perhaps the reason is the slower, more focussed use of the S-system compared to 'standard' FF-systems. Or something with the rendering. Or perhaps the combination of the two.

+2: -35-70-120 were my first three S-lenses with the S2 years ago, in the end could have stayed just with these 3, but GAS appeared over the years.

Probably were for all the earlier users, I am not sure where the other five lenses came from 😉  I prefer the 45 to the 35, my travel kit (with me now) is 24-45-70-120.

Relatively few mention S30. Is it just a false impression I have, or is perhaps S30 (too) close to S35, plus that S35 was released before S30? Just wondering. Coming From one that don't have S30, but otherwise most of the S-lenses...

I have the s30. Although my preference would have been the 35 (the 28 equivalent) my leica dealer happened to have a 30 at a great price, and the 35 would have been new. It was, hence, a no brainer. The S3 image I posted in the other S4 thread is taken with the 30.

I don’t love the focal length but it is a clean and sharp lens in general terms.

I believe the 35 combines better with 70, and personally I found 24mm FF FOV (=S30) allways something in between. But thats a matter of taste, I would decide based on personal preference and your lens lineup.

I have the 30 and find a place for it at times.  I do not think it is too close to the 35, but is that odd focal length.  In 35mm equivalent, it is 24mm (30) and 28mm (35).  The M series had the same trouble with the 24 and it is no longer available.  I love the 24mm Summilux M and like the focal length, so I also feel comfortable with the 30.   The 24mm S is like the 19mm FF, so I really need to work that lens and getting the right point of view can be challenging, but I like the 24mm for close environmental shots.

  • 3 weeks later...

It appears that the new camera will be mirrorless.  It undoubtedly will, by far, eclipse the Hasselblad’s price tag.  I personally decided to buy the X2D rather than the SL3 because I didn’t care about the faster autofocus, (my Sony gear does that) but I did want the resolution, color and great IBIS.  I only have three XCDv lenses, but for my use they are fast, sharp and vignetting is taken care of in software.  The system is relatively small and light and meets my requirements.  After all, I shoot lots of M11M with APO lenses, so I guess I might readily fit into the Hasselblad lens offerings and not measure up to the more refined Leica experts.  I just spent time watching the GFX100RF discussion.  People love the size, hate the lack of IBIS and are over analyzing the few files out there for optical flaws.  Hasselblad is providing an iteration of the X2D in the next weeks. They are probably going to introduce the X3D after the Leica.  What is it that Leica can offer?  Heavier…Pricier…better corrected optics.. more classical optics.. adapters from the old ‘S’ system.. first use of Sony’s latest larger sensor and FF (“AI”) fast autofocus?  I don’t know, but most GFX, X2D and SL3 users are pretty happy with what they are using.  I guess we are left with current “S” system users upgrading….
