I wonder if it would be less complex to make a two position 'zoom' lens? For one thing, most people (okay, I guess I can only really speak for myself) typically use a low range zoom at both ends, and zoom with their feet in-between (unless we're say talking about a 150-600 or something). A high quality f2.8 28/50 or even 35/50 might be really interesting.

Unlike the MATE which is a true three-position lens.

3 official plus one mystery position which I read about jut after I bought my V1 Mate and it sure enough works!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I recall reading the WATE doesn't change from a lines? is this true?

No, the WATE does not change the frame lines. You would use LV for accurate framing. Or the Frankenfinder.

Cannot change the frame lines as in viewfinder of an M 28 is the largest

Indeed, and that is the limitation RF users should be familiar with.  No good fantasising about future yet to be designed mid range multi focal lenses unless it can utilise frame selector. Thing that worked against MATE was complex mechanism as it switched lens selection with change of focal length.

As a reminder Leica M frameline masks come in three flavours, 28/90, 35/135 and 50/75.

On an M-P(240), the WATE Tri-Elmar brings up the 28/90 frameline duo in the finder.

Super easy to use the rangefinder for focusing, and viewing using the EVF2.

I never saw or handled the so-called frankenviewer and would certainly never consider getting one as it looks rather cumbersome.

Note that the lens focuses past the 0.7 m down to 0.5 m (20 inches. At 16 mm and the minimum 0.5 m position he dof scale, for what it's worth, shows a dof at f/22 from about 8 or so inches to 36 inches. Why anyone would use f/22 and focusses this close is a mystery 😀

Same procedure I use with my M10. Works a treat! I do have the Frankenfinder but never use it. It is an ungainly beast. If I was still shooting my M9 or a film M, it would be a different story.

I did write an article a few years back for the LSI Viewfinder on the WATE. I called it the ideal travel lens. I had a 21/2.8 ASPH and a Zeiss 18/4 ZM lenses which I sold when I got the WATE.

BTW, I don’t know if you saw the article on Macfilos about the new Superman coming out in July. They used the WATE on a Red cinema camera to shoot the movie. Something about the WATE giving a more “organic” look to the movie.
