It's completely on Leica that they released the M11 with unstable firmware.

The problem was not in the unstable firmware, as no one is immune to errors. The problem was that serious errors could not be fixed for 2.5 years. This is unacceptably long.

Yes, the firmware should not have been as buggy at the launch, and it should have been fixed faster.

Many, including me, still preferred the M11 to the M10-R despite the M11's firmware state, which shows how much the M11's improvement mattered.

At the moment I have no significant complaints about the firmware and I really like the camera. There are only a couple of small bugs (purple tint and incorrect shutter button operation during continuous shooting).

Maybe I'm at fault for not using all its features but in the roughly 2 1/2 years I've been using the M11 virtually daily as my only camera (aside from a few toys) I haven't had a single problem with it.

Or maybe I'm just lucky, or have low standards. But whatever the reason, I couldn't be happier with the best digital Leica I've ever used, and for my usage, the best digital camera of all.

I wasn't as lucky as you and tried 4 different cameras: 2 M11 and 2 M11-p. I had problems with all of them until the penultimate firmware. It was the constant freezing (2-3 times an hour) and disappointment that pushed me to look for other cameras and eventually buy the X2D. Although now I use both systems and do not regret buying the Hasselblad.

Both things can be true: too many critical freezes/errors in firmware at release and the inability to fix them for so long. The bolded part below is what was unusual about the M11 firmware condition at launch relative to other manufacturers. Yes, other cameras systems launch with imperfect firmware, but usually not at this level of frequency and disruption.

When I had the M10-p or M10-r, I didn't even look at other cameras. With the M11, it was a forced move.

I've been much happier with my M11 than I was with my M10.

Neither had any problems though, so I've been lucky in that respect, though I've never had a faulty Leica in the 40-something years I've been using them as my main and sometimes only camera.

I'm touching wood as I type!
