That's a difficult question, as it depends a lot on what you want to photograph in the landscape that doesn't already work with your existing lens. For example, a 21mm lens might be the next step for wide landscapes and complex compositions. However, if you prefer to separate mountains in a minimalistic way, a 90mm lens might be useful. So: what are you planning? 🙂

35 or wider for near subjects.
50 for near to intermediate distances.  The 50 is versatile and can be used for everything.
90 for intermediate to distant subjects and the perspective is closest to what we see with our eye.

Learn the 35mm first, there’s much there to give great results.

Perspective depends on distance and is something different than angle of view.

The eye's angle of view is somehow more complex, but a 43mm lens (on full frame) comes pretty close to human perception.

A 28mm lens would fit best to what you see through the rangefinder and gives you a wide angle view still almost free from distortions - but yes, it depends on what kind of landscapes you plan to capture. 35mm is a good starting point.

I used 35mm for about 10 years almost exclusively for both portrait and landscape before venturing into other focal lengths. I suggest you give what you have a full workout and familiarize yourself with its capabilities and limitations before contemplating another focal length. If you gotta ask, then you really aren't ready.

I use my M9s for landscape frequently, I take 3 bodies (only because I'm paranoid about dust on the sensor, when I used film I'd only take 1 body)) one with 21mm Elmarit-M f2.8 ASPH, one with 35mm Summicron and one with 75mm Summarit-M f2.5. I always finish up using all FLs but by far the most is the 21mm then the 75mm then the 35mm. I often also pack a 50 and 28 but very rarely do I use them as the other 3 FLs suit my purposes.

The 35mm Summarit is the most flare-resistant 35mm lens in the Leica stable after the 35mm Summicron APO. I prefer it for landscape (50% of my photography) but chose the Summicron ASPH of the same focal length for everything else because it shows more character at close and medium distances and flares nicely while still being pretty sharp at full aperture (the Summarit shows similar sharpness characteristics, as it's also an aspheric design).

That said, 35mm is the most versatile focal length for landscapes. Others prefer 28mm or find 50mm more fitting their idea of the perfect landscape focal length.

A bit OT: @Topsy: Do all your M9s already have ID15/ID16 sensor?

Yes all of my M9s and my M9-P have certified corrosion free sensors I am not worried about corrosion but I hate having to clean sensors with dust on them. I am the same with my Fujifilm kit I try to have a 3 body setup that covers what I need to shoot without changing lenses. Also ahving a 3 FL setup is (for me) a mutch more efficient way of working as I tend to do long photowalks in the landscape and shoot hand held for most of my shots.

What are your top 3 picks?

21, 35, 75. But the sweet lens is the 35 because it:

1. is very usable without an added on viewfinder,

2. focusses very well with the ragefinder,

3. can be used effectively with shank's pony.
