No it's not. That's how VAT works in Europe. It's a regular price buying from an authorized dealer without paying VAT. It has to been shipped outside of the EU of course. When it's entering North America, how much tariff to be paid is a pure luck/skill/relationship/audacity.

Thank you! Could you share your thoughts on the aesthetic differences between the glossy black paint finishes of the M10-R and M11? I'm particularly interested in the quality and application of the black paint on these models. Personally, I find the M6 LHSA sets the gold standard for black paint finishes.

Here's a strange request; would one of you mind putting the rear lens cap of the black paint 50/1.2 on a scale (in grams)? Very curious about the weight versus previous brass black paint rear lens caps.

Surely nobody is using a brush in the traditional sense, but on the Leica Germany website they do specifically use the word for "lacquer" in regards to the new body & lens.

Baked in or not baked in, to me it very much looks like true lacquer, not like some sort of coating.

Normally it will be glossy powder coating  As I said, it is highly unlikely that Leica employs an army of painters  Previous models turned out, when viewed under the microscope to look like being powder coated  As I said I don’t really care what it is called, after all “piano finish” is called lacquer as well.

All I know is when I hear about a new gloss black M camera, I hear The Rolling Stones Paint it Black start playing in my head, and I reach for my credit card.

I know all this, but the cost to ship has not been included (when buying from Wetzlar at least) and also once Wetzlar never reduced their price by the VAT amount on expensive used lenses which really irked me (since they did just months before on another purchase) so if available in the US I'd rather buy here.

I also found that UPS wants to charge a processing fee and at times also has DHL. On top of that, it comes down to how the seller's invoice is translated to who ever clears the item.

Certain sellers are willing to claim whatever the values I ask them. Others don’t. So that comes to the relationship part.

Sometimes the customs believe whatever the value claimed on paper. Sometimes they don’t. So that comes to the luck part.

So far I have been lucky for the past 5 purchases from Europe.

The most recent ones:

Q3-43, €5600 shipped, FedEx charged $56

M11 glossy black, €7500 shipped, FedEx charged $75.

I’m willing to the take the risk to save a few thousand $$$ on each purchase.

Besides, I don’t buy from Wetzlar directly. I found the most difficult sales people in the world to deal with when negotiating the price in that order: Germany, Austrian, Japanese.🤪

Spanish, Italian, Dutches are easier to deal with 😛

Yes, don’t forget sellers from Hong Kong. They support lowering duties and taxes and will claim low.

I did write to Leica Germany and asked them whether they would be able to elaborate on what kind of "lacquer" it is exactly they're using with the new M11 and Noctilux "glossy black paint finish" variants - or whether it isn't lacquer at all, but instead some sort of powder coating or some kind of chemical treatment of the metal now.

They replied and told me that it's "still a traditional high-gloss lacquer, as it has been".
