My hunch is something's wrong at the hardware level

that's very painful, @setuporg, possibly a real hardware issue, a difficult problem, sorry to hear !  perhaps a bad sector on the internal SSD ?

in case you make your fingers schmutzig with linux, then again, try a low-level distro such as slackware (v15.0) or debian that don't come with all kind of automated Fluffy services that may interfer with and overload a barebone PTP access, the prefered path in your case.  you may need to install jmtpfs separately.  and to not bother the photographic spirit of this club here, just send me, if you want, a technical PM full of linux jargon...

Tried with Linux, jmtpfs cannot connect to the device, not recognizing it.  Even though Image Capture and Lightroom do connect and show Leica M11-D name, as well as Windows.  Putting in Apple MFi mode (app) works and FOTOS open the gallery as on Wi-Fi but again only a handful of thumbnails is showing and nothing could be downloaded.

Inserting a card and using Image Capture downloads anything from the card fine.  So it's not the cable/socket.  It's the internal memory or software related to it.

i had to establish a bit of a routine with my m11d too - perhaps this here helps ?

  1. make sure camera is on and is in PTP mode
  2. wait a few seconds
  3. connnect devices with USB-C cable, and wait a few seconds
  4. apply command "jmtpfs /mountpoint", then wait again a few seconds
  5. any error messages ?
  6. type "tree /mountpoint"
  7. does anything get listed ?

what distro & version are you using ?  i feel that Ubuntu, Mint and alike will not be too helpful here.  make sure no automated services happen on the OS part !

that's what i get usually - showing some WARNINGS i just neglect ::

Device 0 (VID=1a98 and PID=2085) is UNKNOWN in libmtp v1.1.19.
Please report this VID/PID and the device model to the libmtp development team
LIBMTP WARNING: no MTP vendor extension on device 88 on bus 1LIBMTP WARNING: VendorExtensionID: ffffffffLIBMTP WARNING: VendorExtensionDesc: LIBMTP WARNING: this typically means the device is PTP (i.e. a camera) but not an MTP device at all. Trying to continue anyway.

Maybe Leica consider launching next model as hardware kit only, user than thinker with software and do system testing.  Users, at least in this thread, are showing high level of computer systems technical knowledge trying to debug this Beta product. There is higher chance camera working if firmware is done by end users, we live in hope.

If the firmware had been released as an open source project, then the M11 would already be able to autofocus and would have IBIS😂

Skilled programmers would even be able to run Doom on it😂

Maybe maybe. There is a common new problem of MacOs Sequoia/Sonoma. Many have reported the following:  some SSD’s cannot be reconnected to anymore. Why? No-one knows it seems.

So my thinking, is that if there is a connect cycle (f.i.) and while you do not see a status (change/ongoing effort/wait/time-out) then the device is locked untill.  And that ‘untill’ might never appear if you (one) just disconnects (like we always did). So the device gets an error code -688840 or something like that which means it is sent off to Limbo. Macos has no repair mode for that. Now I know these 2cents that are not of much help, they just help me get the frustration of the last month away. I lost 2 SSD’s. One 2Tb.

The “User error” Army’s XXVIII Gaslighting Corpus has been unusually quiet on this issue…

Make no mistake, they are watching closely.

They bide their time waiting for the perfect moment for OP to show any signs of negligence or incompetence - then they ambush like Guerilla warfare - but it seems that this severe of an issue describing corrupted internal memory is indefensible and gaslight-proof.

Oh, but just you wait, there’s always a chink in the armor. There will never not be a way to gaslight a Leica user here, no matter how absurd the mental gymnastics.

I better keep my mouth shut now lest I become the target.

Actually M11-D has AF-C but it is intentionally locked. I heard it will appear only in firmware 3.0.0, now it is still in beta testing😜

That will not be popular with the M11-D guys. They like the basics only.

Day 2 using my M11-D and no lockups.  However I did place my order for a Visoflex 2 today, so there's that... for my v3 Summicron 28mm close focus.

Beyond leaving my lens cap on more than expected, I've found myself leaving the On/Off button On accidentally more than I care to admit.   Anyone have thoughts on the efficiency of the M11's sleep mode?

That's because it seems to be a legit issue.

It's not gaslighting to call someone out for having an issue but not even posting what firmware they're using. Often the gaslighting is coming from the other direction.
