In camera works very well too in the Panasonic implementation.. You tap the bits that you want sharp on the LCD and the camera merges to the final image. Sharp and with surprisingly few artefacts too. It will cut a lot off your computer time.

Focus bracketing is mainly used for macros but is also suitable for non-macro lenses. The following photograph would have been challenging to make with manual focus bracketing (FL: 112mm):

Very useful for landscape too.

The linked image was a landscape photo 😄 (tree branches).

I guess they are working at something: patent granted recently:

Interesting. After reading this it does sound like they are attempting generate the final image in camera, thus stacking not bracketing. But if they output as a raw then it may be something.

Thanks for posting.

Has anyone heard any more news on this?  The possibility of focus bracketing in camera would be such a great addition to the SL3.

Has anyone sent a feature request to Leica?

I have multiple times. Both for SL2 and 3. It still amazes me this feature has been left out of the camera as every other mirrorless brand I can think of has it.   I had hoped that the post that showed the patent request  or feature in this thread was going to pan out.

If you read the actual patent, it’s actually Leica’s version of portrait mode to simulate background blur with smartphone cameras. https://patents.google.com/patent/US12254644B2/en

Really?  In that case I would prefer an iPhone over the Leica. The implementation is sure to be better.

Still amazes me that Leica can’t add this to their SL line. Focus bracketing is standard across every other mirrorless camera line that matters. It took Canon a while but I believe their latest bodies have it.   It’s not just for macro work I use it in Landscape settings all the time.

I don’t need it produced in camera. Just create the algorithm to shoot the series and I can use Helicon in post.

I assume it is just not on the drawing board along with a multishot solution. (For the SL3).

I've also requested this.

I wouldn't think that focus bracketing should be technically difficult to program for any of the autofocusing L-mount lens. It would seem that the logic and mechanics of focusing have been solved. What is not clear is what resources may be required to implement the feature (e.g., hardware, memory, etc.) or if that would require elimination of some current feature.

Perhaps a response from Leica would help.

Leica has always lacked this feature within the SL Camera lineup. I agree it’s most unfortunate as there are many applications where it would be beneficial. As a landscape photographer I use focus bracketing daily in my workflow with other cameras.  Leica has everything necessary to make this happen, they just ned to code it into their firmware. As it’s a standard feature on every other companies mirrorless camera it should not be that hard to implement.  Leica has surely a powerful enough processor in camera to allow this and they have plenty of AF lenses.  As the SL3 has been out now for over a year I still hold out hope to see FB added. However the arras for improvement always seems to be for video and the SL3 IMO is not the best platform for that.
