Which means it will be Leica's version of the S5II/X as expected. What you get for 2.5X the price: arguably better ergonomics, inarguably more intuitive menu system, IP54 weather sealing, and no AA filter. What you'll lose is Panasonic's 2-5 business day repair times should service be needed.

I hope Leica keeps video firmware parity with the S5II/X, particularly open gate video recording and anamorphic support.

And I hope Leica will improve anamorphic support over the LUMIX by allowing realtime de-squeeze in live view for stills in addition to video. That seems like it's been a miss on the part of LUMIX.

In order to upgrade the AF to today's standards they must throw some "AI" in there somewhere.  If they do that everyone who want's a Sony, Canon or Nikon in a Leica body will be happy...😜  I am excited about this body no matter what but I think I am fairly easy to please right now.  Glad to be enjoying photography again and glad I got back in with Leica.  It's not perfect but none of the gear I have ever had was.  Even though SL3 AF supposedly isn't "great" I am sure I would struggle with any of the others as all AF systems have changed by leaps and bounds from my last new camera, a Canon 6D.

From what I read, Panasonic does have an AI project. Just not sure when or where it will be implemented. Maybe we know more tomorrow 😉

I am super torn about the release. I was quite hyped and feel like it’s not a big of an upgrade from the SL2-S after the last firmware update. I’ll have to put my hands on it and stress test the AF in continuous and low light situations.

What? Even Panasonic offers 2-5 business day repair times ! Too bad this has not been included in the Leica/Panasonic L² Technology initiative.

Not sure about the size of Leica Camera AG dollar wise but I think a lot of questions about differences between them and other manufacturers may be answered by considering that.  Sony for example, is a behemoth.

I have it on good authority that Leica is working hard and succeeding at reducing turnaround times. We should see improvements in the coming time.

I think I read Leica is now about 1/2 billion Euros annual revenue. I don't know the size of Panasonic's consumer camera division--but given the Panasonic camera sales numbers we do see occasionally, I'm guessing the Panasonic "consumer camera" division might not be even 1/2 billion Euros annual revenue. Maybe someone else can provide the Panasonic numbers?

Would be great if Leica would create an official communication program about their progress in this very important area. Why hide success. I think concerned customers with money to spend would be very interested.

I got a problem with my friend q3 sd card reader; they needed to change the board. A 1.5-week repair. I was amused. Last time when the same Q3 died with a f***ing firmware update via an iPhone app, it took close to 4 months. This was ridiculous, as it was under warranty and fully their fault. With sd card, it was maybe more my friend’s fault (wrong side of the card and hard pushing), still it was free for him. So I would call it a much improvement from a time perspective.

To me the main attraction of the SL3S is that it halved the price of the SL2S.

You’re not alone in that thinking.😉

I’ve no lust for a €5k+ SL3-S, but rather hoping for some news on the elusive APO 24mm. If it doesn’t materialise tomorrow I’ll possibly likely spring for one of those full warranty refurbished SL2-S that are floating around as a 2nd body to complement my SL2 and be happy with my lot.

This thread's gone quiet. I don't believe that everyone interested in what it might be has gone to the launch event.

Can anyone guess when the real specs will be released?
(Other than "it's a Panasonic S5iiX in a Leica case with bad AF, recycled sensor, limited video, ten year old tech and a high price")

I am attending the event in Berlin at 3 p.m. CET (in about an hour). We will know for sure then. I can provide some info after the event :)

Normally on launch days, I get an email from Leica at 0900 EST with the product details. But I’m not so sure today for a curious reason.

In my YouTube feed this am, Matt Day who always has first reviews posted his livestream would be delayed until 2100 EST, curious as the Leica NYC event runs between 1800 EST - 2000 EST.

Since this is a kickoff for the 100 year’s jubilee, I wonder if there’s an embargo for something else? When the SL2-s dropped, it just happened without the big to-do like the SL2 launch.

Check back in about an hour lol.

Their communication program only seems to be geared to promoting the glossy stuff rather than the fundamentals.

That in itself  could be an indication as to where their priorities are .

AFc is going from 6 fps for SL2-S to 30 fps (12 bit) for SL3-S. Quite a difference there. The extent to which AFc actually does the job remains to be seen...

Not very different from sl2-s

so I’ll stick with mine and keep creating.

Robb

I guess it depends.

- phase detect AF

- 6K

- More Codecs, including ProRes & Raw

- Better options for 60p

- Faster WiFi / Mobile workflow

- Improved body and menu system, including flip screen

…all depends on personal requirements. The only thing that I am missing is some better options for 120p.
