SL3-S spec, including

  • New high-speed AF system
  • AF continuous shooting at up to 30 frames/sec. in AF-C mode 😯

"The design of the new SL3-S will be identical to the SL3 model, just without the white Leica logo" Something at one point I was hoping for the SL3 before its release--without the white Leica logo looks very classy IMO.

30 fps in AF-C mode is likely with electronic shutter, as for S5II (see attached screen dump from the Panasonic site). If the S5II-sensor is used, we can expect 7-ish fps with the mechanical shutter and a sensor write out time of 20-some ms.

Indeed - it sounds very much like a Leica-fied S5ii. A very good camera as I can testify, but if one does not need a few of the extras that it offers, like hand-held high resolution, PDAF, etc. the S2S is the camera I prefer.

While a 24MP-only FF camera is not for me (spoilt by Leica's Triple Resolution technology), I do tend to see the coming SL3-S as a positive signal for the longer term health of the Leica SL system. Now if we could hear some news of a new SL APO prime in the works, I would feel even better about the future of the SL system albeit I'm still disappointed the SL 24 APO never materialized. Admittedly, Lack of any new SL APO Prime news, has crossed my mind in a somewhat SL system worrisome sort of way.

i suppose some details are coming out

  • 24MP BSI sensor with low-light performance
  • ISO range: 50 – 200,000
  • New high-speed AF system
  • AF continuous shooting at up to 30 frames/sec. in AF-C mode
  • 48/96 MP handheld multishot mode
  • Leica Content Authenticity
  • Price in Europe: €5,200
  • The design of the new SL3-S will be identical to the SL3 model, just without the white Leica logo

Some people close to Leica report a crazy good AF system. and that was the only big surprise!

24 sensor?

thinking aloud for a random tech oriented consumer...one would expect a progress, ie. more MP sensor plus other newer features (which rumours say, they will be)

will this be commercially good move for Leica?

24 MP is standard for action cameras (a9, R1). More MPs would mean slower readout.

24MP is very convenient for video because you don't need to resample/process much for 4K and 6K. The next step up is around 40MP for 8K. Anything in-between isn't a big-enough step for stills, and a step back for video.

I wonder where Blackmagic gets their sensor for the Ursa 12K. CineD measures it at 5.5ms at 8K, and 12ms at 12K. That's nearly 100MP equivalent. Cine cameras use a lot more power and have a lot more cooling, but surely some of that performance would still be available in a mirrorless form factor.

Related: has Leica finally implemented onboard Blackmagic Raw? That's the only thing really missing from the SL2-S.

24MP FF is of course just fine across the board. However, IMO once some of us have experience with fast sensor readout with very high performance/higher MP FF cameras like the Canon R5/II, Z8/Z9, Sony A1/II and then add the file size flexibility of these brand’s version of Triple Resolution technology…giddy up!

I'm so glad to hear they kept it at 24MP. Hopefully it maintains dual gain ISO at 800. The SL2-S is a great low light camera and fast readout speeds are great for video. Everyone that wants more resolution can continue to buy the SL3. I'm looking forward to what if any AF improvements they make. That's really where the SL line needs the most help.

How often do you REALLY need a super fast readout? In stills virtually never, in. video slightly more often but a pro will simply use a more suitable camera for the shot.

Interesting that "handheld" multishot mode is specified.

Yes. that is a carry-over from Panasonic. Works well but does not add much in my experience.

what is this?...I do 80% hh

Handheld Multishot is new to Leica. Multishot is available for SL2/SL2-S on tripod only: https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2020/06/leica-sl2-firmware-v2-0-with-187mp-multi-shot/

Multishot isn't available with SL3 (yet), but will apparently become available with SL3-S, also handheld.

I guess you never shoot in artificial lighting  that gives colour banding with slow readout? Or moving wheels? It happens often enough that it’s one of the things I would like to see improved.

I shoot a lot of theater, and often encounter PWM-dimmed LED lights. Sometimes even stacked sensors can't deal with it at higher shutter speeds that are sometimes necessary.

Ideally, I want leaf shutter lenses or global shutter sensors if I want to maintain a high enough shutter speed to freeze motion and avoid the artifacting.

🤦‍♂️

you find many people that disagree with you on this question.

Silent shooting and rolling shutter!

Often. And I'll leave it at that 😎
