i in contrast to you @hdmesa really do love the fact that we finally got a cable to download pics and to recharge the battery.  i keep it on her back, the m11d, there is anyway no screen there, fortunately.

I just put the camera upside down when I need to use the cable, but I don't use a soft shutter release so the top by default is perfectly flat.

There was someone on the forum who designed a 3d printer dock as well, it's not for me but interesting idea.

Depends upon what you call normal.  My normal may be different than yours.

i am a command line person, so i show you below my CLI solution - though i am aware it's not everybody's case ::

  rsync -axv --remove-source-files /tmp/MTP/ /tmp/DNG/

with MTP being the jmtpfs-mounted PTP camera drive, and DNG the place i copy the files and directories to.  this one-liner copies-checks-removes files from my m11d.  i have a script for that which does everything automatically for me including importing the image files into my fotomanager program.

only annoyance i experience is when the camera goes into sleep-mode - which is shouldn't do as long as there is PTP activity going on.  i will report this bug to Leica at some point.

As another command-line-and-control person I adore this, but would never allow auto delete until I see the files and only then remove them.  Hmm.  But then it’s hard to remove them…

you are absolutely right @setuporg - that was my dilemma as well, at least theoretically, because practically i luckily never had to experience loss of data : i am 'cleaning' all my SD cards (just one actually) this way for many years, even when travelling abroad. with the same script i transfer my pics daily via VPN to my main machine at home where i process them remotely.  rsync is a good tool, quite reliable, allows even md5sum checks on both ends before deleting the source file.  i am aware that this sounds like gibberish to many, sorry for the geeky jargon.

I’d love to be able to VPN to my Mac at home. Any pointers for an online idiots guide on how to set that up?

i try to be brief, @Derbyshire Man and outline the principles how to get your photos transferred home while travelling - my last post of this geeky sort, promised :

-0- you need to know your home router's public IP address.  unfortunately it may change anytime, depending on what ISP you live with.  mine features 1Gbs up/download fiber-optic and a fairly static IP address.

-1- you need to configure your ISP home router (modem) so it forwards your external home IP address calls with your VPN PORT number to your local home machine (your mac).

-2- you need to install a VPN service on both ends, your travel laptop and your home machine.  i use WG (WireGuard) as VPN service, it's free, versatile and extremely fast.

-3- once your VPN tunnel is alive you may transfer photos or data via SCP or RSYNC to your mac (which in essence is a lnx machine).  you need to enable SHELL and remote login in your mac's settings.

-4- i am not sure how to do that on a mac but on lnx you may use tigerVNC for remote working on your home machine with a full graphical interface.  for example i may transatlantic travel in Europe and still process photos of the day remotely on my home machine if i need to.

-5- i was robbed and cameras stolen from me on trips so many times that i now always pull the newly taken shots from my camera and transfer them home each time i have wifi access.  even my home machinery is backed up daily via WG to a third remote place that has a 24TB disk.

i hope this helps.  good luck !

I'd stick the SD cards in an envelope and post the damn things home rather than taking my whole trip away trying to figure out all of that, it would make my hair hurt........although I do admire anyone who can make this kind of thing happen the question why(?) keeps popping up.

that's why i am bold  @Smudgerer  it hurt so much to get this all running - but once it's up it becomes routine, it simplifies my life, and creates time for other things.

of course it depends also on ones work or hobbies, the fields one is exposed to on a daily basis, which then render such technical adventures into a smooth ride.

ultimately we all want the same, whatever the technicalities are that lead to such - that's creating stories that are embedded in photos

When you do finally upgrade to one of the M chip machines, you'll be blown away. The M1 Max laptop I bought in 2021 was the first new Mac that felt like a quantum leap over everything that came before it.

Me too. M Macs are terrific.

Since realistically there’s no other way to import from the internal memory but connecting to a computer, deleting on the computer after import is reasonable.  I often forget to format internal memory on the M11P after import and have to endure slow PTP scan of duplicates in Lightroom to get the new ones.  Now there’ll be a discipline of deleting after import, checking that it was successful.

I'm sure you know but for the sake of others I realised that the easiest thing to do was delete the files via the Image Capture app where one can just highlight and delete the files whether SD or internal.

Yes Image Capture works fine with me..........Import through IC, copy the selects to a desktop folder for later import into LrC or whatever your PP programme might be, then delete everything and disconnect the M11-D...............But as said before I am now really only using the SD card, the Internal Storage is not used until I find a reason to include it in the mix so presently I just remove the SD card and transfer the files to my PP iMac in the old way then format the card, return it to the M11-D, rinse and repeat.

here a different question, likely a tiny issue, it's about that small little red point, that minuscule red LED dot that out of nowhere pops up above the two or three digits for the "Remaining battery charge in %" : what does it mean ?  it wasn't there for the first week or so, but now i can't get rid of it. taking the battery out doesn't help.  luckily camera works as usual.

apparently that top red dot is meant for : "indicates (when lit) that exposure lock is active" ?  but it only shows up in that battery charge mode...?  it may have started when photos were pulled via USB but i am not sure...

Shows on mine, too. Perhaps an abbreviation for "%" or to make it easy to tell battery level apart from number of shots (in case you have 83 shots and your battery is at 83% you don't get confused)?

...just why a week into using my new toy ?  initially i enjoyed clean digits.   anyway, i should be able to live with that stylized '%' sign...

I really think it's to differentiate the battery percent from the number of shots. If they happen to be the same numbers, then it would seem like pressing the function button did nothing.

Are you sure you never saw it before? You could reset to factory to see if it goes away.

I have a M11-D with a 35mm APO and absolutely love the setup, the feel on your hands and mostly the distraction free experience. Now, let me first answer your question (which many people above also did). I heard from a Leica ambassador that the next firmware update will have a format option in the Photos App / Camera Settings which is great news.

Now, you have a few options to do this. The easiest one I found was either select them all and delete using the Leica photos app or if you use Lightroom (not the classic) on the iPad or iPhone only you have the delete button on the import screen.

Now, somewhat related question to all of you: I am having major issues with the wireless connection between the Camera and Leica Photos App. It kicks out the camera often, also disconnects it if I’m trying to import wirelessly DNG files. Basically unusable without a cable.

Important detail is that I am running the Public Beta 3 of the iOS 18.2. That may be the issue.

anyone experiencing connectivity issues and if you are what did you do to fix it?

Great news, thanks for sharing it with us.

No issues under 18.1.1. Likely this is due to the beta iOS version you're running. But fully deleting the app and its data and making the new connection as was suggested might help.
