This is a step backwards to every digital M sold to date. I know I’m not the only one who leaves a spare battery in the charger when I go out shooting for the day.

Erik

It is becoming the norm that cameras allow in-camera charging and that an external charger is available but not included. A second battery, to be used in an external charger, is typically also not included.

It would be bad if an external charger were not available.

Attention - satire!

I was not party of the discussion either, but being native German with engineering background I could imagine it went more along the lines of:

  • the (very experienced) engineer proudly designed a perfect hood with two baffles, the perfect coverage and headroom for the macro mode
  • After spending weeks at the drawing board overthinking every aspect and refining the prototype, he presented it to the almighty board of directors
  • the VP for marketing looked at it and mumbled: „too big“, the VP for efficiency added: „too expensive“, all other decision takers nodding with a notion of „you should have known this, didn‘t you?“ (virtual slap in the face of the engineer)
  • the engineer went back into his workshop, took the good old Oscar Barnack‘s metal saw from the wall display and … (with a faint smile on his lips and a glimpse to his retirement plan) … zzzzipppp … done!
  • months later the VP of marketing looked up the instagram stats, saw the negative replies and asked the VP of engineering how to proceed
  • „dunno, our expert is on early retirement. let‘s hire a junior engineer from university, he will do a master thesis on that topic for free…“

Perfect!

Hi Erik

It isn’t stupid for me, or for all those other people who choose not to compromise lens performance by adding an extra element.

Also, the lens hood protects the lens extremely well!

I do understand your point though, the solution- if you can’t bear unscrewing the lens hood for macro work is a different lens hood

As for the charger- again, I see your point, but USB-C charging is so convenient  we are in Crete and it’s great to bring one charger block and a few USB-C cables rather than a bunch of chargers with their own power leads!

all the best

Hello Jono.

Thanks as always for your detailed reviews. What I was trying to communicate is that Leica should have just made the hood a little longer to accommodate filters like the 28mm. Just let the lens be longer! It appears to me that they purposely chose to handicap the hood just to make it the same size as the 28mm. What I've done is use the ventilated optional hood for the Q and this allows me to use any filter.

Hi Erik

you can buy a charger separately. It’s not as if Leica was going to give it away free! (Or anyone else come to that!

I disagree with you on that. Up until the Q3 43 and the M11-D, Leica did exactly that, they included a charger in the box.

Two things

if they supplied a charger then the price would be increased accordingly- the new camera is more expensive largely because it has a much better lens. It wouldn’t have been a freebie and many people already have more than one and would prefer not to pay for another.

and I was not party to the discussion, but I imagine it went more along the lines of:

“Market research shows that most users do not add filters to colour cameras

many also understand that it has a negative effect on image quality.

so we can make the lens the same size as the Q3 (length) with a limitation in macro mode or we can make it 2 mm longer (with possible added issues with vignetting).

so let’s make it smaller - there are third party hoods available and of course it’s the work of a moment to unscrew it when shooting macro”

Don’t you think?

Even if that were the case I would have preferred Leica charging an extra $80-100 for the charger in the box then me paying $180 after the fact.

The Q3 is all about convenience. I don't want to have to change hoods depending on how I'm shooting.

Because the cameras are Made in Germany, and therefore subject to EU laws.

Yes, I understand that, as others do, but clearly some don’t, and the issue around the chargers is largely one of perception. Reading the user manual for the camera, the user sees instructions on how to use the charger (as early as page 9, I think). Only later do they see, if they even notice, that the charger is an optional accessory. At that point, they learn that this option will cost them hundreds. I have one, and unless there’s something special hidden inside, it looks and feels like a cheap plastic box with a cable and plug attached. It looks for all the world like something that costs maybe $10 to make, max (it’s made in China). Here in the UK, it goes for a whopping £140! I suspect all of this informs part of the ire felt over its exclusion from the box. It’s a cheap thing that was previously included ‘for free’ (that will have been the perception) with the camera, but now it isn’t. It would be much less of an issue, quite possibly, if it were priced like things in the rest of the world are priced (but I know that horse has been flogged to death on the internet, so will leave it at that).

Barralad has framed this correctly. If Leica is precluded from including the chargers in the box because of EU law, they could sell them for a nominal fee and certainly not $180 + tax + ship as they actually do.

Erik

But, like it or not, Leica is also a luxury and lifestyle brand. Expecting nominal fees from a luxury brand is an oxymoron.

My suggestion is to get a Nitecore. It’s smaller and cheaper than the Leica charger, and has a USB port, so you can plug it into a powerbank and recharge a battery on the go.

Like Apple do, now they don’t ship chargers ? 🤔

Leica's BC-SCL6  dual charger is USB-C and works best for charging BP-SCL6 batteries. It costs about the same as a single battery.

Yes, correct.
I’m happy with the usb-c charging and one spare battery though, I don’t need the extra charger

Leica is absolutely a luxury brand. The issue here is taking away from buyers, something that has always been included in the box previously. Charge your buyers for hand grips, thumb support and cases. When you exclude battery chargers and hide behind EU directives whilst selling these said chargers for $180 separately, it just comes across as a money grab.

My 2 cents.

Has anyone tried B + W 49mm Master 806M ND 1.8 6-Stop MRC Nano Neutral Density Filter? Says it has a “slim filter ring” but I can’t find actual dimensions. I realize lens won’t go into macro mode, just want to be able to use ND filter with oem lens hood.

The T-Pro works on my Q43, maybe this photo off an Amazon page helps you judge other B+W filter types …

I also found this write-up, which suggests the T-pro is their thinnest filter …

From Schneider Kreuznach:

B+W Filter introduces new T-Pro filter range

The filters in the new T-Pro range from B+W are designed with a thinner profile in response to the trend towards ever-compacter camera equipment.
