Since this isa rumor for a camera that none of us truly know is coming (or if you do there's no way you'll be allowed to tell), why are we not dreaming bigger!?

I'm imaging a Q sized body with an S sized sensor of 100 megapixels or so, the 43mm lens would make sense as that is roughly 35mm field of view with that sized sensor. Then imagine the cropping possibilities with a sensor that size and that many megapixels to play with - dreamy!

closest to this suggestion is the Fuji GFX 100s II with the 50 f/3.5 or the Hasselblad X2D 100C with the 55 f/2.5.

but they aren't comparable in size to the Leica Q3. If you add in the Ricoh GRIIIx the comparison becomes even more laughable.

why do you think the 43mm lens doesn't make sense with a full frame sensor? I'd think a 35 would be too close to the Q3. Personally I'd rather have a 50 to my 28 but that's not up to me to decide...

If that were the case, why would Leica produce this Q variant? They would lose the sale of a SL3 camera body, and the future potential to sell more lenses + the 35mm and 50 mm APO lenses you already own. That’s Leica giving money away they don’t need to give away.

My personal view is the very different size / weight, and lack of lens interchangeability, might make people differentiate between the 2 systems?

But if ... who knows what is planned and if it comes to fruition.... Leica ever hypothetically produces an S4 with an EVF, I'd be asking myself why would I buy an SL3, when I can get all the benefits of a medium format variant (which might also be able to take SL lenses via an adapter in a full frame crop mode)?

I could actually envisage a Q3 43mm variant + S4 EVF as being a very good "barbell" set-up, ie, one for lightweight travel (if anything, competing more with my M11 in terms of weight / size), and at the other end, the medium format would be the heavier & bigger tool but with maximum higher image quality.

fwiw, a low 40's lens variant of the Q3 would be a fantastic focal length for me - thinking about the full frame equivalent of lenses that I have habitually used and enjoyed on medium format (Mamiya 7's 80mm, GFX 50/55mm etc).

So, first of all I was kidding around and trying to have some fun with this - hence the 💩eating grin emoji haha

However, after taking a look at those camera size comparisons - sure those bodies are bigger, but where does the focal plane / sensor sit in those bodies? The lenses aren’t much bigger than the Q. And it’s false equivalency anyway - you ever compared a summilux-m 1.4/35 to a summilux-r 1.4/35? They both cover the same film/sensor size at the same aperture, yet their physical sizes are vastly different…

I also never said the 43mm doesn’t make sense in 35mm format, just that it also makes sense on Leica’s medium format due to it being the more traditional 35mm field of view. And we know how Leica loves to keep with traditions!

Oh! I like where you're going with this! Medium format Q! Now I can really start dreaming about that! 😀

Hope someone from Leica takes this on as a serious consideration!

Are you just shitposting or dreamming? Because I would like a medium format fixed lens camera. And the size comparison was more to show that it's not that absurd - not to discredit your post. You just need to switch to rearview. The Fuji GFX 50R for example is a little taller than the Q3 and a bit thicker as well. If you'd integrate the lens I'm sure the body could shrink in size a bit. From a size comparison it's not that absurd. Just a question of who'd be that bold to make such a camera happen? It'd be 12-15k at least I imagine.

It can certainly be done. I would be astonished if Leica were the one to do it, however. Leica has had about 100 years to make a medium format rangefinder and they have not done so, so it would be a bit strange if they did it now. Strange but wonderful. Unless I am mistaken, Fuji is the only current camera maker with a record of making medium format fixed lens cameras. That said, given the expense of current medium format digital cameras, I think the market would steer them towards making a compact lens for an existing body, rather than trying to build an entire new body.

I get your drift, but 60 megapixels already allows plenty of scope for cropping.

Fuji already has a "Pancake" lens for their GFX system - the 50 f/3.5. The fact that they didn't update the 50R is a bit telling... there aren't that many buyers who'd want such a camera in this kind of format. But Fuji isn't the topic here. Let's get back to speculating about Leica Q cameras...

Is that true even you can crop an image to the "90mm" field of view size, but it is not the look and feel of an image taken by a 90mm lens that compressed, shallow DOF telephoto lens image?

Correct. You will not get the compressed, shallow DOF when just cropping to the 90mm field of view.

A Leica dealer not far from Wetzlar told me about an Q3 with 43mm coming soon in 2024. Happened two weeks ago or so. He is well informed as far as I know.

so, better start saving up.

I could never justify it with a 28mm, but with 43mm and a macro ring it could be a legitimate business expense.

I think if I were Leica I would be leaning on my reps and dealers, and reminding them of the NDA’s they undoubtedly signed. Breach of which could lead to termination of contract…

Alternatively, Leica may be happy for the news to leak out. These rumours do Leica no harm, whether they are true or not.

Think of all the folk in this thread alone that are raiding their Piggy Banks and getting ready to complain about long lead times and freezing cameras.

If I'd heard this rumor a couple days earlier I might not be waiting at home right now for a competitor's camera to show up. Just as I was writing this, new camera showed up. If the longer lens Q is all that I'll sell this one in a year when I'm able to get my hands on one.

I still have the X100VI on preorder.  Mine should be in the next batch that my dealer gets.  I will probably keep the order in place.  Worst case scenario I can use it as a daily carry until this one is released.  I’m first on the list at two Leica stores - so I should be able to sell the X100VI for what I paid or, even though it’s frowned upon, not use it and sell it for a premium to cover some of the cost of the new Q.

Every time a new Leica is launched, there’s always a lead up period with a trickle of ‘leaks’ that amazingly come in a sequence and at just the right time to create mounting excitement so that by the end everyone is asking for a link to the announcement at Wetzlar, and panting to get their hands on one immediately. It’s extraordinary how it happens in the same way almost every time (the SL is the only exception IIRC).

I somehow doubt that the NDA lawyers are  paying much attention.

The dealer duly thanks his lucky stars that you are not Leica!

Yes, they must be devastated that people from all around the world are spending their free time passionately talking about their cameras in rapt anticipation.
