LEICA M10 LIVE VIEW MODE NOT WORKING

Hi everyone, while I was shooting my Leica M10, I encountered a strange problem. Here it is:

I was shooting with LIVE VIEW making sure I get the exact focus I wanted. After shooting a couple frames, the screen went black.

I press the LV button again, and would hear the shutter sound. The screen would remain black, showing all info (shutter speed, ISO etc) but no info on histogram.

When I press the shutter, the camera takes a photo, and shows the photo when I press play but I can not see anything in live view mode at all. When I go to "SENSOR CLEANING" and execute command to open the sensor, the shutter gate remains closed. I updated firmware, changed the battery, changed the SD but nothing worked.

The camera takes the photos with no problem - for all practical purposes the camera is working fine, but the LV function leads to a black screen with info showing on top & bottom but 0 info on histogram, complete darkness.

I'm quite concerned as the camera is 2nd hand and, most probably, out of warranty. Has anyone had this issue? am I going to end up with a $4000 paper weight? any help is appreciated.

No, not paper weight, I think it's kind of false contact or you can use the M10 without LV (...as main M users do ).

When you have opportunity just show the problem to a Leica Dealer.

Have you tried a camera reset as found deep down in the camera menu?

Yes, I did! I went through the forums, a couple stories about them having to spent 1500 to change the boards inside the camera got me worried.

I rarely use LV, it was one of those times where the were obstructions close to the lens (tree leaves) between me and the subject so I wanted to make sure I get the right frame. I'm in NYC, i'll take it to either Nippon or Leica, please let me know if you have any other suggestions. Thanks!

it would be interesting to see if the evf worked . it would also be interesting to know if the shutter is actually opening when lv is pressed .

does the screen show shutter speed , iso , etc ? good luck .

yes all the info is shown, its just completely black screen in EVF and no histogram info but it takes the photo when I press the button to actuate. I don't have an EVF to try it

I had this issue with a previous M10 and mine required a shutter replacement. I would contact Leica.

Hihi Gigi.  My camera did the same thing. Have you fixed it yet?

Most likely a circuit board failure or loose flex cable.

And yes, repairs can be expensive. But ask yourself: if you got offered a technically as-new M10 for 1500 $, would you hesitate?

My black paint M10-R back controls and screen would stop functioning when the camera was a certain ambient temperature (circa 75F). Worked fine otherwise. Only noticed the issue in the summer months. Fixed under warranty. No idea what they replaced.

I have the same problem now. What was the solution with your M10 ?

I doubt that you will get an answer. The member last visited early August 2024.

Thank you Jaap. I will send the camera to Leica. The shutter works perfectly when taking pictures but does not remain open for live view or sensor cleaning.
