If you read my post I contacted 2 batterie manufacturers and both told me that the run would be to small to make a profit. Pleas stop talking about 3 party’s it is not going to happen.

The M-240 battery is made by a third party.

Camera West dot com, in the USA, received a shipment of the BP-SCL2 batteries. I got a text notification, the afternoon of Wednesday, the 7th of May. I ordered one spare for each of our 240-series cameras, then proceeded to forward the information, here.

VARTA, in Indonesia, is a significant manufacturer of batteries. They have been the OEM supplier of BP-SCL2 and BP-SCL5 batteries, for Leica M Type 240-series and M10-series, and perhaps other Leica cameras.

I have seen the VARTA brand on several batteries, for photo accessories, such as flash commanders, unrelated to Leica, while at a large pro-oriented camera store, Houston Camera Exchange, in Houston, Texas.

Well, unfortunately, Camera West cancelled my order. They had insufficient inventory to fulfill the order.

“We regret to inform you that we do not have sufficient inventory to fulfill your order at this time. A recent systems update has led to some discrepancies in our inventory counts, and we are actively addressing these issues…”

As a spare part, the battery used to be made in Indonesia by Varta but in a near future,Leica should sell it as a regular Leica battery, according to the link below, so  it could be taxed as a German made product, but it is just a guess on my part.

The vast majority of Lithium-Ion battery cells are made in China. Some cells are made in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and increasingly other geographies by Chinese companies. The rest of the market is served by Japanese and Korean battery cell manufacturers and there is a miniscule US based LiB manufacturing base for certain space/defense applications.

Many companies buy battery cells spot weld them together, add a BMS (battery management system) chip, put them in a box and resell them under their own brand name. This is a tough business with low added value.

B&H lists the battery as "backordered." But they did let me purchase one (at least for now).

Hopefully if enough people have done the same, a few new batteries will make their way here. Some used batteries are pushing $400 on e-Bay. The B&H price was $90. I have two for the M240 I purchased new all those years ago, and the camera still operates as good as ever, both batteries still mostly functional. But a new one would be a big relief. I'm not counting on it, but it would be nice if it happened.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. I know a number of people out there defend Leica for this -- it's an "old" camera. But given the investment and the supposed Leica reputation, a battery should not be what cancels it.

It will not.

Like Jono, I asked Leica directly and the answer is the same: there will be rechargeable batteries again, but it is not yet clear when.

There is third party BP-SCL5 surfaced from China and review of the battery works well. The China battery manufacturer also mentioning the Q2/3 battery is in the final stage of testing and going to have mass production soon. I hope BP-SCL2 will have it third party battery soon.
