• I’m adding Using black paint or black ink for pen coding to my tips for M11 series (tip 8). Sharpies are not inadvisable for pen coding uncoded lenses or adapters but the ones i used were not black enough to avoid false code readings and could cause freezes to the M11. Using a sharpie first to mark the coding pits is perfectly possible though but it is recommended to recover them by black paint of black ink anyway.
• About tip 7, camera becoming unresponsive and rear screen going black have been reported under firmware 2.1.1 in case of shots in quick succession. Happened to me once too so i updated my user profiles and since then i got no more issues.
• About tip 4, Leica has found a fix apparently but i keep it in my list given that some LUF members are keeping an old firmware.
• The tips are purely empirical as usual since 2002 so don’t feel compelled to follow them. All advices are welcome for improving the list if needed.
1. Switching camera off before mounting or removing a coded lens or adapter.
2. Switching camera off before mounting or removing the Visoflex 2.
3. Formatting memory cards with SD Card Formatter before inserting them in the camera.
4. Refraining from selecting lens detection auto for uncoded lenses.
5. Setting auto review to shutter button pressed.
6. Setting dust protection to off when using uncoded lenses.
7. Updating user profiles after 2.1.1 firmware update.
8. Using black paint or black ink for pen coding uncoded lenses or adapters.

If a camera needs all this....  Thanks, no thanks. I like to concentrate on taking photographs, not babying my tool.

See them as possible work-arounds, not normal practice for a camera. If someone loses a leg, they don't deny themselves a crutch.

如果相机需要所有这些……谢谢,不用了。我喜欢专心拍照,而不是小心呵护我的工具。

that's right…… we never heard any of this precautions before M11 series, we just put SD cards in the camera, switch on and shoot, they never freeze, yes I own every model from M9 ……

Hi Ict: please would you like to explain step  y step how to update the user profiles? I will appreciate very much.

I can not agree more with your tips. But... regarding the number 3, in my own experience, you must format the SD card each time it comes back from a personal computer to your M11 with the "Format SD card" from the M11 quick menu. Formatting the card removes the system's files (usually hidden) added each time the card is accessed by a personal computer either with Windows or macOS.

Best regards from Madrid, Spain.

Jaap, an M11 is like a 'Primadonna': to be handled with care ...

To put things into perspective, tips 1 & 4 come from Leica recommendations. Tip 3 has been used for all my digital cameras since 2014 more or less. Tips 1, 3 & 8 are the same as for my M240. M11 novelties are tips 2, 5, 6 & 7.

My own way with Macs:
1. Remove the SD card from the camera.
2. Copy and save the "settings.lcse" file from the card to your computer.
3. Format the card with SD Card Formatter.
4. Do not copy the "settings.lcse" file to the formatted card.
5. Insert the formatted card in the camera.
6. Format again the card in the camera if you feel it necessary.
7. Menu page 4: User Profile > Manage Profiles > Rename Profiles: Edit new names for each profile or type again the previous profile names in the Rename Profiles window.
8. Menu page 4: User Profile > Manage Profiles > Export Profiles > Do you want to export user profiles to card?: Click Yes.
9. Remove the card from the camera.
10. Make sure a new "settings.lcse" file has been created on the card.
11. Copy and save the new "settings.lcse" file from the card to your computer.

For what its worth, my M10M I had for three months before returning it froze more often than my M11 ever did... It's luck of the draw I suppose. "It's a Leica thing"

It's not. It's definitely an M11 thing. Leica has acknowledged it and tried to fix it.

As for your M10M. There are, over the years, reports of M cameras and every camera from every manufacturer freezing. Did you get your M10M brand new or used?  If you got it used all bets are off.

I had a fuji. Same thing. There was a freezing issue when it came out. Didn't affect me. But fuji released an update to fix it. And after that nobody ever complained about it. It was fixed.

It's what happens when you unnecessarily complicate a simple rangefinder to go up against Sony
