A friend of mine broke the shutter release button off the top of his Q2.  He had attached a soft release button and I think the added side force that could be exerted on the extended release was too much for the shaft and it snapped.  I was able to successfully epoxy it back on and it lasted for quite some time, but on a recent trip it broke off again.  He can still press the shaft and take photos, but was thinking of sending it in for repair rather than have me glue it back on.  I think this will be a rather expensive proposition.  Any thoughts on this?  Can Leica USA work on the Q2 or do they all go back to Germany?  He is not too thrilled at being without his camera for months and months, which is probably what it will take.

I hope the Q3 release is better designed to take the additional side force from the added height of a soft release button.

What does your friend use to release the shutter? A hammer?

My guess is that the stem was weakened when screwing the soft release button on. In order to not have them fall off, they need to be turned with quite a lot of pressure.

Funny thing about this is that I've had one on my Q3 and after seeing this thread I decided to remove it. I picked up my camera and was kind of surprised to see that it had already fallen off somewhere and I hadn't even noticed. No idea when or where that happened.

Yes, torque can do it. Another argument against these superfluous things.

How does one fit a soft release to the Q or Q2 shutter button when it is not threaded like the Q3 ??

It was an adhesive back release.  Mainly just a pad of some sorts. It stuck up quite a bit so I think it was bumped and put a sideways force on the stem that holds the release that it was not designed to withstand.   I trust the Q3 with the threaded release is designed to withstand such a force.

No threading at all.  A sticky thing that mounts on top of the existing release and stick up where it can be perhaps bumped sideways and exert a force the Q2 release was not designed to withstand.   As I said above, hopefully the Q3 is designed to take such a force.

So, here is a photo of the one on my Q3.  I started out with one of those big hurking metal ones that screws in and stick way up and has a concave indentation for your finger.  I mounted it on a drill and filed it down to what you see in my photo.  It more resembles the soft release that came with my Rollei SL-35's way back in the 70's.  That was the absolute best soft release ever.  Low profile, convex with thin edges that your finger easily slides over to find it and does not catch on things that would exert forces on the release.  Of course, cameras back then were actually designed to take something like that.  I looked for a Rollei one but only found one not on a camera and they wanted an arm and a leg for it, so I decided to make my own.  I feel comfortable with it and it works great.

Question: why would you use a soft release at all on the Q3? The Leica shutter button is designed to be used as folles: Rest your index finger flat and relaxed on the shutter collar, the slightest twitch of a finger muscle will release the camera without motion blur. In fact you only have t think “Click” and the camera will take the image. Yes, this is Leica M lore and Q3 does have a fake cable release thread, but it’s  always nice to market an overpriced hand polished metal toadstool.

Yeah, I don't get this.  Even my ancient Q has one of the best shutter release feels I've experienced in 50 years of shooting going  back to my M4.

Seems people just like to clutter up their gear to look 'pro'.
