I used to have an M9, but the sensor failed twice, so I sold it. Left with X1 and D-Lux 3, and I feel it's time I own something better. Is the M240 a viable choice in 2024? I wouldn't go for a more fancy M (and much more expensive!). I'd appreciate your opinion.

Very happy with my M262 which is basically a cut down M240 minus video and live view.  Modern software means even  many ISO6400 images are new usable and the lower ISO files are lovely.  The battery life is fabulous too - big battery that doesn't have to do very much!

For many years now that I(we) use M240 family happily, nothing to complain.

My wife, happy user with M262 (light and enough) I choose M240 and M246 happily.

Results are good enough and so many goodies (battery long life, even video on M240/246), etc.

Side note.

I bought M10 in 2017 before having M240 "family" second hand (+ M-D 262) to try and now I rarely use this M10.

Definitely would buy one.  I'm on my fifth (currently M-P typ 240).  Sold four times and re-bought each time after a period with Sony/Nikon.   M-P, 240, MD 262, 262 and now M-P again.  Very happy with mine.  If you don't like live view you can disable the LV button in the menu and avoid hitting LV by mistake.  You can shoot the odd casual video clip using the viewfinder if the mood takes you.

The M-P/240 are heavier than the 262 and MD.

I have an M-E typ 220 too, with replaced non-corroding sensor.  I prefer the output of the M-P.  I've used several M8s too, they are all good but the 240 series is probably the best value for money right now.  I will get an M10-P eventually, but no hurry right now.  I've not had any trouble with any of the Leica cameras I've owned, so they are either very reliable or I've been really lucky over the last 15 years.

Totally! The camera is very good in good lighting conditions and it is also decently capable in low-light, considering that most people will use a fast prime lens with speeds at least to f2. The ISO is acceptable up to 1600 (but some people are more strict and say 800). The files out of M240 are pretty lcean, but the base ISO does start at 200, so you might have to stop your lenses down sometimes when shooting under strong sunlight

Go and get one.
I found a few months ago a mint M-P 240 in silverchrome for 2.1k.
That was a real bargain, but you should find a decent one for about 2.5k.
Attach it with a 50mm collapsible Summicron and you have a nice and small combo for under 3k€
Good luck and let us know what you bought

I have been toying with whether or not to "upgrade" to an M10 (purely for the better low-light abilities) or stick at it with the M240 that I bought back in January this year.

In the end I bought a new battery for the M240, so that answers that question!  I love it, I hope it lasts forever.

240 is the only M with good battery capacity. LCAG made it accidentally, because it is the only M with video.

Reading this thread finally convinced me to purchase an used (mint!) M240 with a 50mm 1.4 Summilux, my first Leica.

Congratulations!

Following this thread makes me dare getting one again.

I had one last year, which had to be returned to the dealer after a month due to a shutter problem.

Your's looks gorgeous with the chrome aspherical lens!

Please, if you want to share (since it's my lens of choice as well in the same brass casing), how does the heavy lens balance on the M240?

Very front heavy?

Congrats again and lots of great memory with this still great camera!

I just bought a used black paint MP 240 for £2.6k. It came only with a battery and a charger and no original box and has a non significant (to me) scratch on the top plate. However, got tempted with the look and it also has a 6 months' warranty having bought from a shop.

I might create a separate post or search for one. What is the best grip people have used? Please don't tell me not to use the grip 🙂

Re grip: Steve Barnett's Thumbie. It provides all the hold you ever need.

Not sure i would use a sticky accessory on black paint but my experience with the Thumbie is limited to my silver M11. As for my M240's thumb grip, it is silver also. It is the Match Technical EP-10S Thumbs Up Grip for Leica M (Typ 240) and M (Typ 262) (Silver). Excellent grip but i have no experience with the black version.
