Stuart Richardson Posted April 24, 2024 Share #21 Posted April 24, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree with Mikko and you too Bruce. At my studio I generally recommend clients to set an upper limit for around 1 meter on the long side for 24mp if they are interested in maintaining maximum quality for highly detailed prints, but of course they can be printed larger and still look nice. But I would say from about 40x60cm and above, the advantage of the higher resolution sensor becomes visible. My point was not that it cannot be done, but that it is done better by the SL2 at larger print sizes. Of course, if you are shooting at very high ISO, then the SL2S is likely to maintain an advantage, but that is honestly not a situation where I have had occasion to test, so I cannot say whether 24mp and lower noise looks better in a big print than 47mp and higher noise in a big print. It might be a wash. Neither is ideal, to be honest...

I'm predominantly a Nikon shooter who uses a Z9 and Z8 for nature photography. I value the 47MP files I get from these cameras when I photograph landscapes and wildlife. I, however, owned Nikon Z6, Z6II, and Zf bodies since their introduction. I have used/abused the latter and loved them for the highly flexible 24MP sensor. In fact, I find the capacity to pull shadows from the BSI 24MP sensor to be ideal, and have printed many of these pictures 20+ inches. It is with this background that led me to buy a Leica SL. I've now owned 2 SL's... the most recent of which is within the return period. After thinking about my decision to spend $1600 US on a 2015 camera, I decided that if I were willing to double the "investment," I could have a newer Leica body. After looking at used prices in the US, I saw that $3200 could get me an SL2 or SL2-S in 8 to 9 condition. I am looking at Leica Stores as the source because I want a minimum of a 6 month warranty on the body. In the end, I've decided to buy an SL2-S for $2900 in "8+" condition. I chose this because of the 24MP file because I know how flexible these files can be. cheers, bruce ‘I find the capacity to pull shadows from the BSI 24MP sensor to be ideal’ I do not think you will be disappointed. The sl2s does really well in this regard, outdoing my m10r. It’s the better choice in my opinion for a walk around do it all camera when you do not have a specific purpose for the resolution advantage of the sl2.
Olaf_ZG Posted April 25, 2024 Share #23 Posted April 25, 2024 Last year, while waiting for the 3 to come I bought a 2s. I was really doubting between the 2 and the 2s. I recently added the 2, demo, being cheaper than my second hand 2s. But I couldn’t be more happy: having two same yet complementary bodies instead of one new 3. For those on a budget: it are happy times.
o2mpx Posted April 27, 2024 Share #24 Posted April 27, 2024 After selling the SL2 in waiting for the SL3, picked up a used S1r, liked the files but didn’t enjoy the bulk and weight, and changed over to a used S5ii. Lightweight and good colors, but like the S1r, crazy making menus. Not the same league as the SL of course in terms of build, but thought it’ll do since transitioned over to a XD2 setup for the resolution needed for landscapes. As the SL3 announcement came, was thinking to wait until it comes to the used market in another year or so. As luck would have it, a silver SL2 came up and didn’t think twice before snapping it up; particularly after seeing the Red Dot Forum SL3 vs SL2 compare episode showing minor differences in detail and resolution, despite YT isn’t the reference on picture quality. Not thinking a SL3 will be in the cards given the silver finish gives the SL2 a small pinch of being special.

theseahawk Posted June 13, 2024 Share #26 Posted June 13, 2024 I picked a certified pre-owned SL2-S, cla’d with a two-year service warranty from Leica store DC for $3200. Traded in a 50mm Summicron-SL (which I wasn’t using) for $1000 off.
pf4eva Posted June 20, 2024 Share #27 Posted June 20, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently got SL2 from MPB for just over 1900GBP, I think it is a good price for SL2, I wouldn't pay more than 2100 for it. I'd suggest even to look at SL 601, camera is great and you can get it for just over 1k GBP. I'm still not sure If I'm going to keep SL2. It has multiple issues which I'm still debating If i can live with or not. I may just sell it and grab either 601 again or SL2s for a good price. Almizilero Posted August 22, 2024 Share #28 Posted August 22, 2024 (edited) One of my trusted sellers just send a newsletter where it is announced that Leica reduces the prices of the SL2 to 2.900 EUR and the SL2-S to 2.700 EUR. I'm glad that I'm not planning to sell mine, but wow, thanks Leica. Cutting the new price from a couple of month ago (5.000 / 4.000) almost in half and basically shredding the used value of these cameras. People couldn't sell them for 2.500 lately, now one'll have to go under 2.000 to have any hope of selling it. So much for Leicas keeping their value 🤣 Again, good thing I think the output of the SL2-S is the best thing since sliced bread and I plan to use it till it falls apart. LocalHero1953 Posted August 22, 2024 Share #31 Posted August 22, 2024 (edited) The Leicas that don’t lose value are those that Leica no longer sell. They are also recognised classics or cult designs. Once recognised as such their value might stabilise or go up. That said, if the SL2-S develops no long term faults, it could just be one of those items. But you’ll have to wait for Leica to stop selling them and for supply and demand to kick in. Edited August 22, 2024 by LocalHero1953
Malabito Posted August 22, 2024 Share #32 Posted August 22, 2024 The SLs are actually worse than other systems. You will also see how the SL3 will just lose its value. Competition is tough, and Leica is not competitive enough in this segment, unlike the M and Q series, where you have little to no competition. If this is true... https://leicarumors.com/2024/08/22/leica-sl2-and-sl2-s-price-drop-now-also-in-germany.aspx/ The used market is about to go even lower. The SL2/S will end up being sold for 1.5k, and that's if you are lucky.
Flou Posted August 22, 2024 Share #33 Posted August 22, 2024 (edited) Price for the SL2-s dropped from 4900€ to 2700€ 😮 I wanted to buy a used one…and in a really good condition you have to pay the Same price or often even higher. I checked ebay for the last 4-5 weeks. I now ordered one from Foto Görlitz-Store, there are only 8 Sl2-s left. Can‘t tell you how lucky I feel, that I didn’t buy a used one already. Now I will get a brand new one with 3 years of warranty 😊 I don‘t know if the price will only drop that massive in the Foto Görlitz-Store. In the Leica-Store it’s still listed with 4900€. There are only 8 more SL2-s left at Foto Görlitz. If the other Leica-Retailers don‘t lower the price in an similar range, I don‘t expect a massive price drop in the second hand market. Eoin Posted August 24, 2024 Share #34 Posted August 24, 2024 The "first owner" depreciation of the more modern Leica cameras (post M10 release 2017) and lenses has convinced me to never buy a new Leica again. Matter of fact 2nd hand prices I've seen very recently, mint Summilux-SL 50 or APO SL 50 or APO SL 35 sub €3000, SL2 sub €2500, Q2 sub €3000, M11 sub €6000 almost make these items look like decent value compared to their new sticker price. I know I'm fortunate enough that I can afford to indulge my Photography fetishes within the Leica M,Q & SL systems 2nd hand, but as for buying new ... no thank you. I've just discovered this new pricing for the SL2 & SL2-S and considering last week I paid €2600 for an absolute mint SL2 at <500 clicks, I don't feel so bad. Truth be told, while it's nice to open something brand new, it's even nicer to open something "almost new" and save yourself 50% of the new price. Olaf_ZG Posted August 24, 2024 Share #35 Posted August 24, 2024 Having bought my 2s about 18m ago (€3800 second hand), I added the 2 new for €3500. It is a great combo, and I don’t mind prices going down. I wont upgrade, so if one stops working, replacement is cheap 😇
Geoff C. Bassett Posted August 25, 2024 Share #36 Posted August 25, 2024 Hope the U.S. sees a massive price drop as well. Would love to pick up a SL2s again. These are tools to me, I'm not buying them as an investment.
Stuart Richardson Posted August 25, 2024 Share #37 Posted August 25, 2024 Buying new has never made much sense as compared to mint used item, at least unless used items were so scarce as to be priced nearly the same as new. But in general with Leica you will save a lot if you wait a year or two and buy near mint. You will save many many thousands over an entire kit buying that way and if you buy it from a store you will probably still have some warranty too, if not the full one.

Bikie John Posted August 26, 2024 Share #39 Posted August 26, 2024 I just had a quick look at second-hand prices in the UK. Somewhat to my surprise, at the main dealers (Wex, MPB etc.) the SL2-S seems to be a couple of hundred quid more expensive than the SL-2.
