Not because of new cameras but a AI bots are scraping the forum for interesting content. As this led to slower pages and worse effects I decided… to use a firewall – which caused several problems – and to move to a new server – which caused even more problems I'm still trying to fix This is happening worldwide for more than one year now and will not slow down anytime soon. In addition to what you already use as mitigation, if your server runs BSD (it is good enough for netflix CDN, it might have been your choice for the forums as well), you might be interested in https://geoghegan.ca/pfbadhost.html If your server does not run BSD but you have access to a MacOS device, the script can be setup and run there. The resulting IP addresses and networks list can then be converted (it is plain text, no extra software needed for conversion) to the appropriate format for the firewall used. It was closed due to the flooding when we were there, so we went for a long lunch near the airport and then caught our Qatar plane back to the UK. mujk Posted Wednesday at 07:51 AM Share #484 Posted Wednesday at 07:51 AM (edited) Situation still the same, i.e account locked. Password reset worked and I can also open the forum from another device, without using a VPN. Both devices seem to be in Chennai. Before the password reset I also got a glimpse of the ads, which I normally don't see as a premium member. Looks like they could really be quite overwhelming some times. At least the current premium membership fee is well worth paying to get rid of these. Maybe there could be more membership levels? LUF Admin Posted Wednesday at 09:25 AM Share #485 Posted Wednesday at 09:25 AM Sorry for that. The firewall support activated the firewall after I had deactivated it intentionally. I've switched it off again but issues might still occur because of caches etc. Andreas 1

wlaidlaw Posted Thursday at 09:55 AM Author Share #489 Posted Thursday at 09:55 AM Andreas, it seems fine to me. The grey screen on opening a post has gone as well. Wilson

pop Posted Thursday at 10:51 AM Share #492 Posted Thursday at 10:51 AM Couldn't reach the forum today on around 08:30 MEZ (I closed the browser window after watching the busy cursor for about a minute). All's fine since about 11:15.

pop Posted Thursday at 12:09 PM Share #495 Posted Thursday at 12:09 PM Update. Right now (13:05) I can't reach the forum with the chrome browser in my so called chromebook. startpage, a privacy-centered browser, shows the forum right away. One could come to the conclusion that it's the Google analytics or some such which are causing the DoS. Just an idea, of course, with no further facts to support it. wlaidlaw Posted Thursday at 12:24 PM Author Share #496 Posted Thursday at 12:24 PM I think one thing it may be worth folks doing is to clear their browser caches. In Mac Safari it is necessary to have the optional "Develop" menu showing on the top menu bar, unless you are good at remembering multiple keystrokes. To empty caches, you need to have Safari open and then it is Option-Command-E. In Chrome for Mac it is Shift-Command-back space. Firefox the same as chrome for Mac. Windows users will have to seek their own info, as I have not used Windows for over 20 years. Wilson

I haven't had any problems today in London and the forum's response seems a little faster than it has been at times over recent weeks, Andreas. Thank you for the work you've done behind the scenes to fix the meltdown. Pete.
gbealnz Posted Thursday at 08:50 PM Share #498 Posted Thursday at 08:50 PM It's patchy for me, distance perhaps plus Pete's hills. But annoyingly slow or non- responsive. Then it has moments where it "just works". I'll try Wilsons cache emptying trick.
Gibbo Posted Friday at 12:03 AM Share #499 Posted Friday at 12:03 AM Mostly better than it has been recently. But with the occasional stutter.
