I still have my dad's at my studio. He taught me how to use it when I was about six or seven I think. I think he was hoping I might be a businessman. He could never anticipate the terror that awaited...an artist. I still run a small business, but the 12C is most useful for holding prints down so they don't curl.

OMG, HP calculators!  Still have a couple.  Picked up a 15C re-issue back while I was still working, used it all the time although I preferred the 35S mostly.

RPN is the Leica M of calculators; only for those that know how to use it or are willing to learn.

Yes, an apt comparison.  Bring back memories.  Yes, HP calculators were more expensive than other calculators, and you had to learn the RPN notation, which I still think is superior--Just like the Leica RF's.  I went against the trend when I bought the HP calculators (both scientific and financial), and I'm going against the trend by buying M's (manual focus and RF window finders).  When the camera manufacturers came out with the autofocus, I thought it was the worst invention they had ever made (I still think so).  Besides, life will be too boring if you are only following the crowd!

Another RPN HP calculator / M series user here. Still have my 48GX, and my father still uses his 11C. 😁 For when I am not home, I also have an HP calculator app on my iPhone (and this is the "calculator" that I use the most...). I am quite amazed at how the discussion on Leica M10 batteries moved to RPN calculators.

Regarding to the initial topic, I see M8, M9, and M240 batteries seem out of stock at the Leica online store. For the M8 and M9 there are third party options (so I guess Leica may not bother for these models), but not for the 240. Is the out of stock status of M240 batteries just temporary or are M240 users left behind now ?

  • 3 weeks later...

Last week I picked up two new M9 batteries from Leica London - seems they are still available at some places.

I also picked up an old Coolpix 950 a few months ago - it uses rechargeable AA's, so no risk of obsolescence there (the camera was about 1/3 the cost of each Leica battery).

Now a wonderful technical museum artifact. Who still knows the Reverse Polish notation today? I've just taken mine out of the drawer again. I should dust it off again. And, of course, batteries are still available.

RPN rocks.

I just tried to do a price check on theses little buggers. Very few shops seem to have them in stock, most show a delivery time of 3 month or more (which probably means never). Those who have them in stock ask way more then I paid a year ago for my spare. Is the BP-SCL5 no longer in production?

In which country ?

I have no indication of the production actual status, but I see several store near me (in Paris) that seem to have some in stock as per their website.

My HP41CX is on my office desk, use it still!

I ordered two more M10 batteries, yesterday, from B&H Photo Video. (New York City, USA.) Alarmingly, they showed the BP-SCL2 battery, for the 240-series, to be “discontinued,” so, I checked other sites. Leica Store Miami showed “out of stock.” Today, I checked Adorama, a large NY/NJ USA store, and ordered FOUR Leica BP-SCL2 batteries. That was a significant investment, of course, so, I had to really think about it, but, I made a commitment, about two years ago, to keep using my M10 and M Type 246 cameras indefinitely, rather than “upgrade.” (I may yet add a pre-owned M10 Monochrom, sooner or later, if/when  the prices fall significantly more, but do not plan to trade-away an original M10 or a Monochrom 246 for it.)

For reference, regarding longevity, I have 2002-era Nikon cameras, with electronics, that continue to function. D2hs, a DSLR, and F6, 35mm film SLR; rather heavy, and specialized tools, so, only occasionally used, but still functional. (I did not start using SLRs or DSLRs until 2010, so, bought these pre-owned.)

Well, I just learned that Adorama only had one BP-SCL2 battery, for the 240/246, which was shipped. Three are in “back ordered” status. My BP-SCL5 batteries, for the M10, successfully shipped from B&H.

I bought a mint used M10 in February (including battery, don't know if it's original, but it holds a charge just fine), and also bought another one. I wouldn't be adverse to buying another 1 or 2 as insurance, but I read that even unused batteries have a shelf life, so I'm not sure about buying them. Have you investigated shelf life of new unused batteries?

If they have been sitting unused for a really long time they may be dead dead. If they will take a charge they are fine. If you’re storing them you should charge them every six months or so if they need it.

I agree with jdlaing, in that unused batteries should be charged, from time to time. A best practice would be to create a schedule, and mark it in a calendar.

I have recently read advice that indicated that charging, each time, to a full 100% is not a best practice for lithium-ion batteries.

My BP-SCL5 batteries, for the M10, do not hold a stable charge, over a several-week period, whether in the camera, or not. I keep mine next to my MacBook, so that I am reminded, and can check them fairly regularly. I no longer keep them fully topped-up, but, do not let them completely self-discharge. Somewhere in the range of 45% to 55% seems to be a good time, to my mind, to recharge a battery, whether it has been sitting unused, or is being used.

Notably, the long-held belief that a battery should be run completely to zero, periodically, to prevent it from developing a “memory,” is something that pre-dates lithium-ion batteries, and today’s smarter chargers. It is NO LONGER a best practice to run a rechargeable battery to 0%.

My BP-SCL2 batteries hold a much better charge, for a very long time, whether inside the camera, or on the shelf. When the camera is in actual use, a BP-SCL2 has amazing endurance, compared to a BP-SCL5 inside an M10.

I do not claim to be an expert. Please do confirm everything I have written, by consulting other sources.
