..with the SL2-S I cannot even remember.

December 2020 it was exactly similar, so this is nothing new. Serves its purpose, the camera is a tool. Luxury items are something else.

I would have expected a more modern "egg carton" packaging instead of foam. I purchased a non-photography-related electronic item earlier this week, and I was pleasantly surprised that the packaging could all be recycled, except for a small plastic bag that kept the item itself dust-free. This kind of packaging doesn't prevent you from saving your boxes for posterity, Leica boxes have been made of card stock for decades.

The photograph of SL-3's boxing looks fine to me, however the Summilux 35 Re-Issue's packaging was really pathetic in comparison to the delivery of other Leica lenses, even my 28mm Elmarit's packaging was far better AND the lens came with a good leather case, the Summilux just had a cheapo draw-string bag!

If anyone is not satisfied with the packaging of the brand-new SL3: please send it to me!!! I´m waiting for my SL3 and would accept almost every package to get it fast...😂 Today tried to shoot a redkite with the SL2 / Vario Elmar 100-400 combo and missed the new AF....

Strictly speaking I miss the SL3-AF  A N D  glass more than 400mm.... Think I have to order the Sigma 500 5.6 on top....

It's a box...

Was the camera undamaged when it arrived?   ----Yes. The packaging performed its function, no issue.    If not, then there is a need for improved packaging.

P.S. Hasselblads come in nice boxes.

Actually… no. The viewfinder‘s panel shows a vertical line left of center. I try to get the camera replaced today.

In Germany (hopefully also in other countries) we have "Unverpacktläden" . I hope the definition translated by google is "not so bad": An unpackaged store is a retail store that differs from other stores in that the entire range is offered loose - i.e. without containers and therefore free of packaging.

So tht will be the next step for the SL4 :)

I prefer things locally sourced, so if Leica will let me stand at the end of the conveyor belt and catch an S4 as it falls into the big bucket of cameras at the end of the line, I would be happy to forgo the packaging.

Regarding packaging, the SL3 is the same as the SL2 and SL2S, I believe. Other than the charger etc. The packaging is fine to my mind. The S cameras also came in similar packaging, and they were of course quite a bit more expensive. It has only really been the M and Q cameras that have that luxury style packaging, as they are aimed largely at collectors (or at least aimed more squarely at collectors and rich enthusiasts than the S or SL cameras). I think that may also be a holdover from when Leica was owned by Hermes. The S and SL cameras, while luxury in their way, were aimed at being professional cameras, not collectibles, so I think their packaging was more utilitarian. It is still fine to my mind.

we under looked / under appreciated japanese boxes. They are origami marvels, one sheet of cardboard is enough to protect any devices.

SL packaging is ok. I kind of like it more than their drawers type with lots of drawstrings bags. Very annoying to unpacked.

Minimalist packaging is the way to go. SL boxes is not minimalist not eco-friendly with all the foam it uses.

Never mind the packaging (looks rather on drab side), but SL3 comes with that same awful neck strap that I got with my SL2-S that I replaced with 50mm EDDYCAM.

The packaging is fine for me. They could even replace the foam with recyclable materials for all I care. It gets stored in the attic once I unpaked it just for the next buyer when I would ever want to sell it.

I am glad that they kept the small and light silky bags. They come in handy to carry small accessories in a bag with the camera without fear that they will scratch it or get lost.

I like the strap, not around the neck though, but over my shoulder or chest… comfortable for a day long walk with one of the zooms attached.
