I also own a Canon 400 f4 DO, which I used on the SL2 a lot. I will sell it because subjectively the Sigma has better sharpness and at least the same IQ than the Canon 400 DO with a 1.4TC (which is 500 vs 560mm at f5.6). In addition, it is significantly lighter and easier to handle. I love this lens!

Hi Mike,

Yes, I have sold the Canon 400mm f4 DO v2. I have also sold Canon RF100-500 and Canon RF 70-200 - together with Canon R5 - as I want to limit myself to the L-system (there are limits to how many systems I can use with some regularity; being a non-professional photographer). I am very happy with Sigma DG DN 70-200 (Leica SL90-280 is on the heavy side for me); and the thinking was/is that Sigma DG DN 500mm will substitute the Canon 400mm. Whether the Sigma 500 is up to Canon 400 when it comes to resolution and sharpness is an open question; but I hope it is sufficiently close for my use of long lens(es). Time will tell - but first I need to get that Sigma 500 lens in house... The Sigma is, however, very attractive from a size/weight-perspective, which is a very convenient factor for my use.

And thanks for guiding me on Elephant gender; there are limited number of Elephants where I live, and those living here (in caption) should definitely live on another continent...

Looking forward seeing more photos with the Sigma 500!

OK so you 2 guys, along with Hugh Brownstone's review  have convinced me to buy the Sigma 500 f5.6.

I sold the Canon 400mm f4 USM2 this morning and also pocketed some change change after paying for the Sigma. I expect to receive the Sigma by Friday, just in time for a week-long safari I'm doing. I'll share images....

Best,

Mike

Looking forward to seeing the images, Mike! I have a new lens on the way since the copy I got was out of spec out of the box; it didn't focus properly at long distances; but it worked brilliantly at distances up to some tens of meters. I really enjoy using the Sigma 70-200 GD DN, and I expect the 500mm is as good/better based on what I have seen (excluding the lens I received, that is...).
