That's a very unusual circumstance where you have access to AC power, but nobody in your party has a USB phone charger, your vehicle doesn't have a USB plug, no one has a laptop with USB, etc. In that case, you might want to bring a second phone charger, a 12v adapter for a car, or buy a spare Leica charger (original or aftermarket). I realize it's an inconvenience and extra expense, but those kinds of circumstances always require some redundancy in your equipment. A 12v power socket adapter should only weigh a few grams, and you can get high-power versions for a very reasonable price (under 20 Euro).

Hang on - I need to charge during the daytime when there is solar power available. At the same time that I use the camera. I need a dedicated charger then. How many fellow guests have Leica chargers?

Powebanks are heavy - I can only take 15kg on a light aircraft including camera gear

i checked Nitecore website.. they have carbon fiber case around 150gr for 10 000 mah. The old leica sl4 has 2000 mah and weighs around 80 gr.

4 batteries weigh 320 gr. Offset 2 batteries and save 180 gr for a power bank. It might be a charging loss. One needs test it at home

That's why I said it was unusual. Powering any camera in those circumstances is non-trivial. I can think of a few options (provided you don't want to purchase a dedicated charger)

  • Bring a longer USB cable and plug your SL3 into a vehicle whenever you get a chance. Even an old Land Cruiser should have a "cigarette lighter" socket (check ahead obviously).
  • Get a small power bank, charge that with solar during the day, and use the power bank to charge your batteries overnight.

Honestly, in your situation I would buy a 50€ Nitecore charger (or two).

The included Leica chargers require 220/110 volts. How can you provide that in the field?

Nitecore charges via USB power.

I generally use a couple of Nitecores, and quite a few vehicles have an inverter for 240V nowadays. But that is by no means guaranteed. On night drives the cigarette lighter socket is in use for the spotlight.  I'm not really worried, I managed for over 20 years of digital.

Personally I find the absence of a charger a deal-breaker. I cannot imagine having to charge by USB when I am out shooting with large power-hungry lenses and not a power source for this funny USB adapter within miles, nor having a power bank dangling from my camera.  I always rotate a couple of full batteries. Do I have to get up a few times at night to switch charging batteries?
This is a camera aimed at professional level use, right? War correspondents, wildlife photographers, antarctic expeditions, etc? Not just one battery every two days shooting the cats and kids.

Slamming 400$ on the price to rectify this cost-cutting is too Leica for me.

There is another thread here about a month ago gnashing teeth about the presumed high price of the new SL3. Then it comes in at the exact same price as the SL2. When I consider how many people buying the SL3 already own a compatible charger, it would seem that making everyone pay for an additional charger could be viewed as unnecessary.

Saving the planet by omitting the charger and then expecting you to buy it additionally - great move. 🤑
On the other hand - many of us already has a charger from other SL's or Q's, so...not a big deal for me...

It’s not a big deal for you, me or most of the people queuing up for an SL3. It’s not going to save the planet, but at least it’s not wasteful.

Nikon Zf doesn’t come with a charger too… To rephrase: “too early compliance with EU directive”…

I must read that directive Does it say : “You may not sell a camera with a charger in the box”.? Anyway, a directive is just a directive. It can only have force when embedded in national law.

I agree. Anyone who can afford a high-end digital camera (any brand) probably has a drawer full of USB chargers already. I know I do. Somewhere in that drawer is a Sigma-branded charger for the fp that I've never used because I plug it into my phone charger.

For how long will the charger be compatible? It is already designed for the previous generation. If Leica will come up with a more powerful battery for the SL4, it may become underpowered

It shows Leica is not considering itself as a company for professionals. Rich people and wannabe’s only.
