Digilux 2 serial numbers and sensor failure

In my case, it looks like cup of cafe-au-lait has been poured down the sensor: in one case, a murky set of vertical coffee-colored stripes and in the other case a waterfall effect. Lotsa coffee colors, tho.

I'm preparing to visit my dealer on Saturday for a howdy and a here's-this.

So, it's not my backup at the moment (and I don't have a digicam with a SILENT shutter now). :)

Rang Adeal last friday, still waiting for parts, could not give an indication when they would arrive.

Will ring again in a couple of weeks if I have not heard from them.

Several years ago when I last dealt with them, they were only getting one shipment a month from Leica

My serial no 2992xxx, only about 550 exposures.

Regards, Stuart.

Geez I hope I'm not holding a time bomb- I can't imagine what I'd do without the D2!!!! Mine has probably run about 5000 exposures so maybe it'll last the distance (famous last words?!)

Mine is 298XXX and without a doubt on return the software had been updated and the photos are much better than when the camera was new.

I'm wondering if you are referring to raw or jpeg quality?

My D2 sensor died and it's costing me $509 to repair. This will include a new rubber coating -- mine has completely come loose. I asked about upgrading to the D3 and was told OK for $900ish, but when I called back the next day, I was told that the D3's were gone and the upgrade would have to be on a different (lesser quality) model. I told them to go ahead and repair and am now patiently waiting for mid-April when my D2 is scheduled to return.

Here is what I've seen. When I switched the camera on horizontal stripes were running quickly up and down the display like badly tuned old aerial TV signals or an VCR with bad tracking. The strange thing is that after I took the shot below it was OK. I hadn't used the camera for a month and a half and back in January I saw no symptoms of anything. Notice the curling of the image in the top corners. The 100% is from the upper left part.

I switched the camera on again today, it had been sitting switched off since Friday. The stripes were back, again gone after the first shot and not bad enough to register on the one shot I took.

Any one else experience something like this?

Those stripes are the ones which show when it starts. Most likely it will be more of this after 50 odd shots.

But don´t worry, the sensor will be replaced without problems by your LEICA- repair-facilty.

Hope they get their money back from PANA ....

Best

Does Leica update the software when they replace the sensor? They did that in my LC1. Just a few differences. Does anyone know what the changes in software might be?

What differences did you notice in the LC1? I had the idea things had changed, but it probably was due to missing the D2 for two months. Couldn't put my finger on it.

I'm glad I re-upped my subscription here! Was wondering why my D2 unexpectedly stopped working a few weeks ago and was totally unaware of the Sensor upgrade. Sent mine in to NJ last week and just called them this morning to approve $487.50 worth of repairs, including:

1. Replace the Circuit Board

2. Adjust the Auto Focus

3. Update the CCD

(I know, I know, i've posted this info in four other threads now - just trying to be thorough for those keeping up with all of this)

My estimated time of return is May 21st(!) - hopefully it won't take that long.

Hi, some time ago I posted a note about sensor failure in my panasonic LC1. Thanks to those who replied with repair info.

Well after a few weeks at the Sydney, Australia panasonic service centre it is all fixed with a new sensor etc. and I think image quality is now better than new..

However while I was without the camera I succumbed and bought a Panasonic DMC L1 SLR so my LC1 is now for sale. It is complete with box, instruction book and all the usual supplied cables and charger.

I can ship it anywhere in the world and if anyone is interested please send me a private message.

thanks

I'm glad that you Digilux 2 users have had your cameras repaired free of charge.

Sadly, my Panasonic DMC-LC1 CCD failed recently and despite negotiations with Panasonic UK they do not wish to repair it at all, let alone free of charge.

Their reason? At the time I bought it the DMC-LC1 was unavailable in the UK and so I bought it as new from an eBay seller in Dubai. It arrived in original box with all accessories, apparently unused except for having been on display in a shop.

Panasonic UK inform me that any of their products bought on eBay, in whatever condition, are considered second hand and therefore not covered in any way by their warranty.

The failure was almost identical to the behaviour cbretteville describes above, and the serial number is in the range mentioned on Panasonic Canada's page Important Notice - Digital still camera, note that the range should be read as A4SYxxxxx - G4SYxxxxx. My DMC-LC1 has a B4SYxxxxx serial number and was bought in summer 2005.

Leica owners can therefore be secure in the knowledge that the Digilux 2 is therefore better than the Panasonic DMC-LC1 in possibly the most important way of all, the manufacturer actually supports the product!
