Mine was sent to NJ and it took a little over 4 months to get it back. I called every few weeks to check on progress and everyone at Leica was very friendly. It was returned all cleaned up with a fresh new battery. Although it took some time it was worth the wait.

Thank you Leica for the fine product and service you provide.

Although My D2 failure fit the description of a sensor problem. Leica N.J. sent me a repair estimate for work to be performed: Replace Circuit board, Upgrade to current standard, Adjust autofocus, Adjust cullimation, Check and adjust for good working order. $430, 3-4 months.

No specific mention of replacing the sensor ( serial # 299xxx)

I was very gentile with My D2 and never dropped it.

Anyone else experience a circuit board problem?

Meanwhile back to My trusty Leicaflex.

oh no, i don't like the sound of that last post. i just sent mine to nj february 19, serial # 299xxxx and per colleen's return email, she said if it was a sensor problem it would be covered by the now expired warranty (nov 04 purchase), however there were lots of cameras there and to expect a 4 month wait. i, too, shall call periodically to check on progress, and keep my fingers crossed that i do not get a "not the sensor" estimate back.

My Panasonic LC1 has the sensor failure symptoms, so I contacted Panasonic here in Australia but they really did not know what I was talking about! I have taken it to one if their service centres and hopefully they can get some action. If anyone in Australia has had a similar problem please let me know. Thanks

Somewhere or other there is a little web page with a table showing the Panasonic serial nos. that were known at the time to be subject to the failure. I think it has been posted either way back in this thread or elsewhere on the forum - maybe even still up on the Panasonic website. Sorry I don't have it to hand - I have the D2 so it was of academic interest.

I remember reading in the archives a few months ago and someone said that 60000 D2's were produced. Not sure if it's still possible to dig up the old thread, maybe someone else remembers.(Bill Parsons?) I was thinking along the same lines as Riley in that even with the sensor issue sorted the later D2's wouldn't be immune to Murphy's Law,although I admit that's wishful thinking on my part....Meanwhile the glass on the D2 is the nearest I'm gonna get to the Summicron Glow for a while...good luck........Liam

Hi Liam.

I powered up my D-2 today, after a few months sleep, and the sensor is just smears. The serial number is 2987xxx.

Checked with a different battery, but same deal. Guess it'll go for a refurb of the sensor.

What I like about my deal is that my cars, cameras, and other electronic equipment always fail in the driveway -- not 500 miles away on Sunday evening. :)

I plan to keep this thing because it's SILENT! I'll report on the time-to-fix.

Regards to all,

Cheers for that Bill, sorry to hear about your cam. It's starting to look like the sensor failure is mostly affecting the earlier models .Hope mine (30140xx) continues to work well 'cause it was my first decent camera and I'm very fond of it.Even with it's small(er) sensor it produces sharp colourful pictures, and in black & white it's a little diamond.

Liam, I have a print at 13x15 of a kid's face that was about 1/10 of the sensor (that would be about 1mm square). That works out to about a 35x enlargement.

If one stands back about 4 feet, the 'grain' is not particularly noticeable, and the color and saturation are excellent. This is a great camera. Did I say SILENT?

2984xxx from March 04, no problem so far.

Seen what I fear are the first signs of the sensor failing today. The camera has been sitting idle for about a month. I'll have a chat with the Norwegian distributor tomorrow to see what they say.
