Ivar B Posted February 28, 2024 Share #1 Â Posted February 28, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Someone I know here is looking for a 41mm yellow filter for this lens. I have tried to check, and it looks like neither Heliopan nor B + W offer this size any longer. There are some used Leica filters on eBay, but at extremely high prices. Does anyone know of other sources? I see many offer 40,5mm filters, but these may not fit?

But worth contacting him just in case:Â https://www.peterloy.com/stock-list/

sandro Posted February 29, 2024 Share #5 Â Posted February 29, 2024 Are you looking for any yellow filter that fits the Summarit, or does the Leitz brand and original box add to the fun? I see nice filters now and then in the bay. Lex
Pyrogallol Posted March 1, 2024 Share #6 Â Posted March 1, 2024 I now keep a large orange filter in my pocket. I can just hold it over the front of the lens when required, any lens whatever the size of the filter thread.

To see this explanation from some years ago.  Some Summarits could take both bayonet mount and screw in filters. I have some examples of the former ( I don't ever use filters of any kind - these just came to me with collections) - see on the right here.  Welcome, dear visitor! I have some examples of the former... There is provision on the front of (some / most / all?) 50mm f1.5 Summarits to take either style. If the screw-in is used then the XOONS hood clips on to the outside of the lens barrel. If the bayonet-style is used then the XOONS hood clips on to the outside-front of the filter. I have examples of both. IMX the screw-in are MUCH the better style in use as the bayonet fit ones I have are not a tight-fit on the bayonet mount and can quite easily become turned if the hood catches / is knocked and can even become dislodged resulting in a fall to the ground. As the XOONS hoods are hardly dirt-cheap this is not a good situation to experience! Don't ask how I know... Admittedly my sample-group of bayonet-mount filters is only three units (some are better than others) but suffice to say I will not be buying any others in this style. Not that it helps with a Yellow filter but the Marumi brand make a UVa 41mm filter. Having bought my Summarit but having had no luck in finding a clear filter (for protection) my solution was to acquire one of these onto which I super-glued a cheap-as-chips generic 40.5mm reverse conical vented hood. This works for its intended purpose perfectly well for relatively little outlay. As the front element / coatings of the Summarit are notoriously prone to damage something to protect my example - which, happily, is in VGC - was an essential accessory to purchase. It's actually on the lens at this moment and will be coming out with me today. Philip.
wlaidlaw Posted March 2, 2024 Share #10  Posted March 2, 2024 Am I correct in thinking it is only the earlier Summarits that offer the bayonet option? My late 1959 lens does not have a bayonet filter option but only the e41 screw thread. Wilson

Having had a quick look around the www it appears that the change to the 'filter option' coincides with the change from the aperture triangular index-mark being engraved on the aperture ring and with the f-stop values engraved on the barrel to the more usual form with aperture f-stop numbers being marked on the ring and an index mark engraved on the barrel. From what I've noticed over the years (I could well be wrong!) this change happened sometime in 1957 but with allowances for a bit of cross-over of parts so, roughly, 1947-(early?)'57 both styles of filter can be used but only E41 between (later?) 1957-'60. They eventually dropped the bayonet mount, but I don't have an exact date or SN number for that. My M mount Summarit which takes the bayonet filters is from about 1955/6 and my two LTM version items are from earlier than that. I only have the bayonet filter items as they came with a job lot which I probably bought to get something else. As I pointed out before, I don't ever use filters, not even UV ones. All of mine are 'collection' items. If the lens can take the XOONS hood it should take the bayonet filters. I would advise checking this situation or, better still, going to a retail store and checking whether it fits, which is what we all did in the 'good old days' before the internet. I signalled this in my other post above.  On 3/1/2024 at 8:49 AM, willeica said: You would need to determine whether your Summarit takes the bayonet mount item. sandro Posted March 2, 2024 Share #13 Â Posted March 2, 2024 William I am not sure about your remark regarding XOONS. My Summarit (1953) needs the E41 filters to be screwed in and takes the XOONS hood, with or without filter attached. Lex
TomB_tx Posted March 3, 2024 Share #14 Â Posted March 3, 2024 I hadn't noticed before, but my 1956 ltm Summarit can also take the bayonet filters. This has f-stops on the barrel and index on the aperture ring.
