I am surprised a brand new lens was not replaced rather than serviced. Unless there's just no availability, I'd have requested replacement.

Gordon

I guess I will end up with a new lens. The lens was first sent to a national service center (taking care of service of Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, Pentax, Zeiss and others). They cannot do more, so now Sigma international takes over. I dont have a rush and I know I will get a new lens if I request this from my local store, but in this case I let the lens follow the standard procedure. I will, clearly, thoroughly test the lens I end up with, whether it is the original or a new one; I did like the size/weight of the 500mm, I foresee this will be my main long prime for years to come.

Excellent. Still waiting for service of my lens; I got an update last week confirming that the lens was/is out if spec.

I bought the 1.4x converter together with the lens. After a few test shots, I realised that the image results were sharper when I took pictures without the converter and then cropped out a little. I also sent the converter back to Sigma for checking, but the service department found no fault. I have therefore returned the converter.

I also bought the converter and I am really disappointed with it. The images are completely blurry. I will also return it. I might give the Leica converter a try. I know it is Sigma as well but let's see.

I have the Leica 1.4x extender, but I havn’t tested it on Sigma 500 since the latter is in for service/or being substituted with another lens…

I think @LocalHero1953 has a sub-par Sigma extender, as well as a (properly) working Leica extender. Hard to conclude based on some reports, but thorough testing of lenses and extender(s) is a good advice - for us all.

Not me🙂!
I have no extenders at all.

Ok, then I got a new Sigma 500mm DG DN f5.6 since the first lens I got was soft on long distances. The new lens is sharp and as it should be, I recon, so no problem there.

For the Sigma 500 users: There are two (main) options for stabilisation; either using Sigma's optical stabilisation (5 stop according to Sigma) or Leica's sensor stabilisation (also about 5 stops). I have run a few tests, and I don't see that much of difference. As expected, perhaps, based on the reported 5 stop gain. Any experience/recommendations on your side? Which stabilisation setting are you using?

My understanding is that lens image stabilization is more effective than sensor stabilization for long focal lengths.

Yes, this is my understanding as well. Prior to Sigma 500, I used the Canon 400 f4 DO v2 as the ling lens on SLx, and I always used the lens stabilisation on that lens.

One factor to remember, for me at least, is to deactivate both lens and sensor stabilisation to switch off stabilisation altogether. Yes, the lens or body may recognise that eg tripod is beig used, but sometimes one want stabilisation to be turned off.

Helged, can we really switch on/off both types of stabilisation separatly?

As far as I know it's a combination of both; when I switch off on my Sigma lenses (ok, no 500/5.6) the Icon in SLx viewfinder shows this, so I can control IBIS via the button on a Sigma lens in my opinion.

I asked Leica several times and got different answers...

With the Sigma 500m:

(1) If lens AF is activated, in-body stabilisation cannot be activated (greyed out in the menu).

(2) If lens stabilisation is off, in-body stabilisation can be activated or deactivated.

The above means there are three options with Sigma 500mm and SL2x/SL3: No stabilisation at all, only lens stabilisation, or only sensor stabilisation.

Addendum: I am happy to see that Sigma 500mm with the Leica SL 1.4x extender produces results that are optically close to the 500mm lens alone, resulting in a very acceptable and capable 700mm L-mount ‘prime’. Good.

This is only partly correct. . With all longer Sigma ( and possibly other brands,I don’t know) lenses, when body stabilization is selected  only the camera  will handle stabilization, when lens stabilization is selected the lens OIS will handle linear movements and the camera IBIS will handle rotational movements.
On a side note it is advisable to select one of the custom functions. They pre-activate the stabilization to stabilize the EVF. C1 for general use, C2 for panning ( I.e horizontal stabilization is switched.off so you don’t fight it during panning, e.g. with track sports. ) The functions can be modified with the USB dock.

Thanks; I quickly looked for info about combined lens (Sigma 500) and body (SL3) stabilisation, but I didn’t find this in the respective manuals. Where to find this explained (or perhaps it is ‘common knowledge’, and as stated, I only quickly scanned through the manuals).
