During this past summer I have had an unexpected project, taking pictures in Le Roc bistro bar at Southwold Harbour.

It started when I gave a print (B&W darkroom) to the owner Gerard that I had taken inside to see how well my new (1970) 35mm Summilux lens performed at f1.4 he liked the traditional look of black and white and was keen on some more.

So most weeks during the summer I took pictures, mostly of the staff working. A selection of prints are now displayed in Le Roc.

These pictures are all from Leicas ranging from early 30's screw model 11 to 111g and M models from M2 to M6. The lenses also ranged across the decades. The latest pictures were taken with an M2 and 85mm Summarex at f1.5 with very little depth of field. Just about all the pictures were taken with the lenses wide open. Films were FP4, HP5 or Foma 400. All printed on Ilford Multigrade paper. I can recommend the coffee and food, from snacks to Gerard's full French menu.

These three were taken with the 1949 85mm Summarex on an M2 at f1.5

All the pictures shown are scans from darkroom prints.

This print should not really be here, it was taken with a Nikon S2 rangefinder camera.

If this is down by the river, as I think it is, I know that area well, though I don't think I've ever eaten at Le Roc - we've usually gone to the Sole Bay Fish Company. From where we live Southwold is one of our two closest options for the seaside (the other is north Norfolk). That row of eateries is a survival from the nineteenth century (including the little ferryboat to get across the river to Walberswick).

A lovely project to work on and I'm sure they're pleased.

Wonderful collection of work, I can imagine how delighted they must be to have your images on show. A couple of this unique area known locally as the Blackshore taken with a Q2M

Two more Le Roc pictures.

Leica 11 with 50mm V-Summicron. 100th at f2. Very little depth of field close up at f2, one focussed on the fresh bread, the other on the lady's face. Scanned copies of darkroom prints.
