Guest Posted November 21, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted November 21, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) As the owner of a CL (the garish Paul Smith edition, no less) I am a bit surprised that a) there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of CL cameras in the used market - the usual, reliable suspects like CameraWest, Leica Miami, B & H or Tamarkin have exactly zero inventory; b) the regular edition black ones I have seen - Popflash for example - still go for almost 3K (that includes the 18mm Elmarit, though). Fleabay prices start at $1700 or so, body only, and there aren't a ton to choose from. I think it's quite a remarkable testimony to the versatility of the system, people seem to hang on to their copies for as long as they can. Not easy to procure a second backup copy... Advertisement Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 Hi Guest, Take a look here CL pricing end of 2023. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Camaro5 Posted November 21, 2023 Share #2  Posted November 21, 2023 I moved from a CL to a Q2 and don't regret doing so, but do wish I would've held on to the CL. It really was a nice camera and I got some nice images with it. I got bit by the 47 mp bug of the Q2 but the resolution of the CL was fine for most things.  It is interesting that they're getting harder to find and that they're holding their value.

Speaking from personal experience, HK in general is a good market for Leica, though.

Yes they are not so easy to find. I am on my third. Sold the 1st when I switched to a Q2 then regretted it and returned back to a CL which was recently stolen while we were in Amsterdam. I just got a like new replacement from a camera shop in Tokyo. I've had good luck finding them in Japan and always get fast shipping and no issues. MapCamera is my favorite vendor there. In my current kit I have a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and recently added the Sigma 23mm F1.4 which is now my constant friend. The CL with the Sigma 23mm dc dn gives me excellent results even with its slightly bigger profile. I think they are had to find because they are such a fine camera that those of us who are smarter than me aren't in a hurry to switch. The actual body design doesn't do much for me, which is why I took the garish, disneyfied Paul Smith version route. IQ speaks for itself (for an APS-C camera; no comparison to my S). As a travel companion, it's pretty nice, too. I wish Leica had developed a CL2 with faster and stickier AF, but that won't happen now. Re deficient trade-in values, I guess that's almost always the case with picture taking computers.

GFW2-SCUSA Posted November 23, 2023 Share #11  Posted November 23, 2023 I think Leica made a huge mistake in dropping the CL which is, in my opinion a true gem. I understand why so few used ones are available - why get rid of such a wonderful camera! I, too have thought of trying to get another one. I find the SL2 a fine camera, but it's large and heavy. I use my CL more often. The M 10 is still my first choice though.  Perhaps Leica will repent and reissue the CL with some improvements, but I fear that is not the direction they are going.  3
jaapv Posted November 23, 2023 Share #12  Posted November 23, 2023 Indeed. From a user point of view they killed off one of their best cameras ever. Everybody who owns one is hanging on to it.
TL3 Posted November 25, 2023 Share #13  Posted November 25, 2023 I actually called all those places in Hong Kong last year to try to buy a CL but they were all gone even if online was showing as in stock.   Perhaps it’s a case of little supply and little demand?  The APS-C Leica I can’t imagine to have sold in great numbers, which would explain why it’s hard to find used. Mr.Prime Posted November 25, 2023 Share #14  Posted November 25, 2023 (edited) Ah, the CL.I have some v good images from those days with an adapter for my Barnack and M lenses. My girlfriend said they were the best she’d ever seen. However, I heard the CL-2 was coming soon so I sold it on after a few months of owning it, before the prices dropped. As there was no CL-2 it would have been better to have kept the CL but now it’s obsolete my digital images are now all from my iphone. Leica doesn’t make a camera I want anymore. If you have a CL, hang on to it. Edited November 25, 2023 by Mr.Prime

JoshuaR Posted December 1, 2023 Share #16  Posted December 1, 2023 I really regret selling my CL. I’m eventually going to want to buy another L-mount camera to use with M mount lenses and zooms, and my only choice will be an SL variant, which I think will be too big and heavy. I occasionally look at the CLs that are available with the 18mm Elmarit. I took some nice images with that setup. It’s tempting to buy it again. thatkatmat Posted December 1, 2023 Share #18  Posted December 1, 2023 (edited) Love my CL, I've owned all the Q's, you can keep 'em. I really love the 3 Leica Zooms with the CL as a travel companion to my M10r/35FLE. Such a small and versatile kit. I too thought they were gonna come out with a CL2 and sold my CL...But held on to the lenses. I was lucky to find a like new CL shortly after the news that there will be no CL2 though and will certainly hold onto it. I like the larger sensors typically but the CL is a different beast. Side note...I don't buy too many new products on preorder, but I was a laydown sale for a brand new CL2, I think Leica did in fact miscalculate it's appeal.  A couple recent travel shots.  Welcome, dear visitor!
